do i need a calculator for my foundation year at lancaster university?

It really depends on your subject. Anything sciency it's worth having one, but arts subjects you probably don't need one. You can buy them on campus for a reasonable price or in town, so don't worry about it too much. If in doubt, ask your lecturer if you'll need one.

They're £5: buy one anyway. If you don't use it FOR uni, you can still use it to work out the ratio of males to females in your lecture, or the kinetic energy of an average rhinoceros travelling at the speed of light, and whether or not you can destroy the moon with said rhinoceros.
