Lisbon

Hi everyone, I just did a search and I couldnt find anything that seemed relevant, so sorry if its a repeat topic.

Basically me and my boyfriend are going on holiday to Lisbon in July and I was just wondering if anyone had been there and had any recommendations of must-see places or things to do.

Is there any resturant imparticular that was amazing that you would recommend?

Also I am really interested in the beaches, as I know my boyfriend will be keen to go- does anyone know of the best ones and roughly how long it takes to get to them?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help

I don't know street name, soz, but search for these online or something:

Casa de Alentejo - it's fantastic, Portuguese food, in an old mansion that was then used as a Socialist/Communist HQ; it's got a whole ballroom with a stage that's all worn out cos no one's used it in years, it's amazing, and the food is great too.

The Chinese Palace - not actually sure if that's its name, lol, but it's something along those lines; it's up a hill, it's a bar with all sorts of randomness. Anyways, it's cool for hanging out after dinner and whatnot

Bairro Alto - shopping heaven, *esp.* for shoes

Belem - this is by the coast, I didn't go to the beaches cos it wasn't beach season, but this place is reknowned for its pasteis (egg custard tart things), sooo good, every cafe does them; the best cafe imo is a large one covered in tiles (tho a few look like that, lol), it's simply called Pasteis de Belem and it's 86-88 R. Belem (basically the main street).

Whilst in Belem it's cool to see the monastery and the old tower for purely sightseeing-ness, just don't go on a Catholic holiday... That's happened to me quite a few times, I got hit by an old woman with her cane for trying to escape the procession :s-smilie: lol

Don't wear heels around Lisbon - car to bar, sure, but not any more, the streets *tear* them up! I had to buy flats whilst I was out there (from Bairro Alto, of course ).

You can pretty much walk around a lot of Lisbon so it's cool to just discover it, and take the vernacular train thing [don't know specific details, you may have to search if you don't know it already]. It's just cool to see Lisbon gradually higher and higher, and then takes you up to where that Chinese Palace place is. And a load of delis, too. Niiice delis

Ooh! And go to the docks for dinner as well; there's a strip of restaurants there, try the Portuguese ones (as opposed to Italian etc), they do *very* good food with lovely views. Some of them require booking in high season I think; either way lovely waiting staff and a good dining experience all round.

hiya,I lvied in Portugal last year and Lisbon is such a lovely city. here are some random other places that i discovered that were slightly off the usual tourist trail. If you do any of them you have to make a trip to, it is this amazing multi-coloured castle in the middle of some woods, mybe an hour away. Also there is a Portuguese version of Versailles called paacio Queluz. It is a bit out of the way but it was beautiful and when i went i was the only person there. If you go to the Parque das nações there is an amazing aquariam there, one of the biggest in the world, a huge tower where you can get great views of Lisbon and a huge science museam amongst other things. there are some quite cool museams around if cultural type things interest you. Theres this huge monastry that has been converted into an Azulejo museam (azulejos are the typical blue adn white tiles that you see in Portugal). it soudns really boring but it was really pretty. If you're ever bored there are big cinemas in all the shopping complexes and most of the films are in english. If you fancy going to the most westerly point in europe, Cabo da roca cliffs is also quite cool.
