Hi Guys,

My name is Ellen, I'm 20 years old, I study Business Management and Marketing and I am currently on my placement year as a Marketing Assistant at Nottingham Trent University.

If any of you are thinking/considering on going to NTU and have any questions on the university life, any of the three campuses, or Nottingham city in general, please let me know here and I will try my hardest to answer!

I am usually on TSR between 9 am - 5 pm Monday - Thursday, and 9 am - 4.30 pm on Friday, so If you have any questions on the weekends, I will try answer them Monday morning!

I understand that there are 3 campus but each one says "home to the school of..." does that mean that you only live with people that are doing the same course as you? Also does this mean that everyone in the uni is quite separated?

The schools are split between all three campuses, which means the courses of each school will be based at the campus that the school is based at. For example, if you study Business Management you are part of the Business School, so will be based at the City Site. However if you study Chemistry, you are part of the School of Science and Technology, which is based in Clifton campus.

However that does not mean you will be living with people studying the same course as you. In my first year I lived with people studying graphic design, law, civil engineering and psychology while studying a business management and marketing course, so there was a variety of people doing a variety of different courses in my flat.

The City site and Clifton Campus are very close together, with bus services running to both campuses every 15 minutes. Brackenhurst campus is a bit further out than both the City site and Clifton Campus, but there is a buses running from city centre to Brackenhurst every 20 minutes. Clifton is about a 20 minute bus ride from the City site while Brackenhurst is about a 45 minute bus ride from the City site.

I would not worry about everyone at NTU being separated depending on what course they study, as that definitely is not the case! Lots of people from the City site commute to the Clifton Campus every week, as a lot of the sport societies do their training on the Clifton Campus. Also quite a few people from Clifton Campus decide to live on the City site and commute to Clifton every day, so there is a chance you could live with some who studies at Clifton in first year!

Yes thank you that's made it so much more clearer! If I do come, I will be studying broadcast journalism which is on the Clifton campus. But I want to be living in a lively place close to the bars, shops and other activities.. Do you know what the best accommodations for this are?

Our City site is right in the city centre, so there are plenty of bars, shops and restaurants around! If you want to live in the city centre I would recommend living in one of our halls of residences in the city centre such as Hampden, Sandby, Gill Street North or South and Byron.

Hey,

I'm not sure whether to do a Marketing course or Business Management?? This is a hard decision for me. But then again should I study advertising if I want to get into the creative side or stay broad then go into it after so im not limiting myself??

Another thing, my Mum is worried about me possibly living in the middle of the city because non of the other uni's im looking at are city campuses. How safe are the acccomodation blocks?

In my personal opinion, I believe if you are still a little unsure of what aspect of business (or marketing) you are interested in, it is better to go broader and narrow it down from there rather than go straight for the narrow option.

Both our Business management course, and our Marketing course, are very good and flexible courses. I believe that the first year of quite a few of the business courses at NTU (including the courses you have chosen) are quite broad. In your first year you can find out what you enjoy and then specialise in the following years.

For example I personally study Business Management and Marketing (Joint Honours), one of my friends also studied this course in first year but found she was enjoying the accounting and finance module more than the marketing module, so decided to move onto the Business Management and Accounting and Finance (Joint Honours) course. I also know of someone who decided that they loved the marketing aspects of our course, but wasn't interested in the management side so decided that the Marketing course was the best option for them.

When making your decision I would look at the courses (and the modules) thoroughly and see which course appeals to you the most. Also look at the student profiles (which I have linked down below) and see what other students think of the course. If one course jumps out to you in particular, then I say go for it!

In regards to our accommodation, are accommodation is very safe! We have excellent security including CCTV, door entry systems and on-site or on-call security staff. When I was in first year, I always saw Wardens wandering around and I never had any problems!

I am most likely going to be putting Trent as my insurance option. I was wondering when and how difficult it is to gain accomodation in the main campus. And more specifically on the standard shared kitchen and bathroom rooms?

As we have such a high number of applicants, I'm afraid we only allow applicants who have accepted us as their firm choice to book our accommodation. However we do leave spaces for results day so if you don't get the results you wanted, we should have rooms available although I cannot guarantee they will be on our city site.

Our shared kitchens are of a good quality stocked with cookers, microwaves, fridge freezers, storage facilities, a kettle, a toaster, iron and ironing board. We have a mix of en-suite and shared bathroom flats on our city site, but both are good sizes and overall our flats are very comfortable to live in!

If you are interested in NTU and considering putting us as your insurance day, have you thought about visiting us at one of our open days? It would be a great way to see the campuses and the city, as well as looking at the accommodation for yourself to see what you think. I'll leave you a link below:

In my two years at NTU I have covered a range of topics!

In first year you will learn the basics of business with basic modules in marketing, accounting and finance, operations, quantitative methods, economics, management, and enterprise.This is perfect for first year as it allows everyone to get to the same level of study as well as ensuring, for the people that have never studied marketing before, that marketing is the course that they want to study.

Second year becomes more specialised towards marketing (which I really enjoyed). There is also a few more options for second year with the option to do 3 modules and then study abroad or take an internship in the last 6 months of second year. However as I was planning to take a placement, I just took all 6 taught modules.

The modules I took in the first half of second year were research for marketing, integrated marketing communications and buyer behaviour. This was the marketing half of my course and I really enjoyed it!

The second half of the year I did the management side of my course and studied strategy and innovation, managing and organising, and out of the two optional modules I chose international business communication. (The other optional module I didn't study was managing global supply chains). Although I have to admit I prefer the marketing part of my course more, I still enjoyed this half and found it very interesting.

After that, as I am on my placement year and I haven't went into my third year yet, I probably know as much as you. I'll link you to the course below and if you would like to, you can look at the third year modules:

Yes that is an option! You can transfer to one of the joint honours programmes after your first year if you find that you are enjoy one particular part of business!

I'm thinking of studying geography at NTU but would prefer to stay on the city campus rather than on the Brackenhurst Campus. I was wondering did you know of anyone who does this commute for their lectures and what do they think of it?

Also is there a regular bus service between the two campus' or can you bring a car and drive?

Unfortunately I personally don't know anyone who does this commute. However, there is a bus service that runs every 20 minutes between Brackenhurst and Nottingham City Centre which takes about 45 minutes. Also, for that bus you can get a discounted bus pass because you are a NTU student, so it works out not too expensive!

If you are planning to drive, please be aware there is not a lot of car parking spaces available in the city centre (especially free ones) so, if possible, look for accommodation that comes with a parking space.

How active would you say the Student's Union is? And are the societies within it actually really proactive and doing things too? It's sort of been a deal-breaker for me making choices because I want to get really involved.
