If this is all true (and you never quite know with RT) it must be fairly alarming to be Iranian, knowing that Russian cruise missiles are overflying your country with massive warheads.

the guardian just covered it

Reading it now... it seems that this will just further stoke up the extremist elements and lead to years more bloodshed and terror.

Really? Seeing as most Russian air strikes so far haven't been against ISIS I've yet to be convinced.

Knowing Russia tactics of its anything like Chechnya or South Odessa expect the precision strike to be finished off with a rather large scattering of cluster munitions over town centres.

The entire Russian operation is aimed against Turkey and the US. So they are hitting both the FSA and ISIL.

At least they won't have to go to the trouble of installing a new corrupt puppet regime, like they did in Chechnya.

I do wonder though if this isn't effectively a case of US outsourcing. After all, who better than the Russians to crush ISIS (if they ever get round to it - they still haven't really attacked them) than a country that doesn't give a fig for human rights?

They've done nothing against ISI(S)L yet. In a way that's surprising if part of the Russian war aim is to ally themselves with Iranian interests.

Russia has separate interests from Iran. They have hit ISIL targets, I have been getting the reports on my Facebook feed all day. Russia and Iran aren't allies and will never be allies. Russia wants Assad to stay in power because that weakens Turkey and this military action in Syria puts the American off balance so the Russians have the heat taken off them about Ukraine. In the end though not much Russia can do and it is done for.

The Russians do have the ability to do things that need to be done that the west is unable to do.

However, so far, what we're seeing is ISIL being left alone by the Russians and air strikes being targeted against the less nuttier anti Assad forces.

Russia's had/has its ongoing problems with these types of nutters. Don't think the 'we hate the west brigade' only hate Europeans and North Americans.

You're more radical jelly heads seem to be orignating front Bosnia and Chechnya.
Russia may be mostly targeting non-IS positions right now but if there ultimate aim is to keep Asad in power they really have no choice but to do so. It seems right now they're happy to let the US and allies do most of the IS bombing while they focus on the other enemies of Asad. It's a win win situation for them.

The ideal solution would be co-operation. Maybe let Russia and their allies sort out Syria while the US and its allies focus on Iraq.

It really isn't like that. Well or not well, NATO have been trying to do something about ISIS without helping Assad. The situation in Syria did not arise originally from ISIS, it came about from the Arab Spring and a large number of well meaning protesters in Syria having the immense courage to rise up against one of the most brutal governments in the Middle East and that's saying something in a region full of them. Those brave people deserved and still deserve our support. The brainless fanatic thugs from the radical Salafists then joined the battle, often focusing their attacks on those same brave resisters, who fought back with skill and verve.

To see people thrilled that Russia is now attacking them is very sad. Russia is one of the worst powers in the world for doing bad things to people who don't deserve it. They claim to be on our side against radical Islam, but they aren't attacking radical Islam in Syria, they are picking sides in the Shia/Sunni struggle. The original Syrian Spring wasn't a Sunni/Shia thing, the Salafists want to make it one and the Russians are helping out.

Their motives in Syria are entirely cynical, they are obsessed with the Tsarist/Soviet nonsense of a port in the Meditteranean (why do they need one??), they want to continue to be able to sell advanced weaponry to Assad at the cost of ordinary Syrians and they want to be a nuisance to the West and an ally to Iran to also sell arms there.

For this cynicism, the further heavy losses of civilian life that are the inevitable consequence of their bombing campaign will be the result.

I'm aware of that, but I'm also realistic and know that the people fighting Asad (non-ISIS) are never going to win no matter how much support we give them. I don't agree with Russia bombing them either, I think both sides have it wrong.

The only possible outcome is for the legitimate opposition and Asad to hold talks and come to a peaceful solution to form a new government while both sides bomb the crap out of ISIS. This is ultimately how it will end, though no doubt tens of thousands more civilians will die before it gets to that point and it will likely take another year or two, but it's the only realistic solution. The problem is that Obama and Putin both have their own ideas about what to do and neither side wants to compromise. Eventually they will come to a deal.
