I've noticed a pattern with the people that tailgate me, its nearly always a BMW or a white Escort van. I don't really get it.

Golf GTi drivers can be bad too, thinking they have a cool car, I laugh when I see MK4 2.0 GTis trying to race other cars with their 2000kg and 115bhp

Depends totally on the road conditions. Busy 30 zone, 25 possibly. Wide, empty country lane that I know like the back of my hand, well...fast lol.

Shame we dont live in Italy... The police have a fully marked Lamboghini. How cool would that be!

usually i dont stick to limits, i just keep up with the person in front of me so i dont hold back traffic:smile:
30 zones/built up areas around 30 depending on the conditions. Rural (NSL) bendy thin roads, probably about 45 depending on how well I know them. Straight single carridgeways 50-80 depending on police presence, road condition etc.

Motorways I really don't have a limit for. If they are empty and there's no police about 90-100. Otherwise I try and keep it under 90 if there's a bit of traffic on the road.

These are indicated speeds and looking at a GPS which is much more accurate probably actual speeds are 10% less.

I would like to point out to people that allthough it is often safe to go fast on small wide country roads you must not forget the wildlife. At high speeds hitting a rabbit could be very dangerous, even at moderate speeds hitting a deer is as good as hitting a car. it doesn't matter how good a driver you are, the animals can spring right out infront of you. Where i live there have been some nasty accidents from this.

For this reason i never exceed 60 on b roads unless the verge is clear and very wide, like a select few are.

I stick to 30 and 40s religiously, anything else i tend to go 10% over if it is safe to do so.

Motorways i tend to cruise at 85.
Reply 32
Totally depends on the situation where i am and whether i know the roads.

Would never do silly speeds in 30's but i cant say i've never been above 30 in them.
Reply 33
exactly, obviously its stupid to speed in 30's, half of the people on here are acting like they wrote the bloody law.

Anything over the legal speed limit for the stretch of road you're on!

We've all seen the TV adverts about the effect of a little extra speed if you hit someone. There's a reason for all speed limits, even if it's not obvious to you personally, or you may not personally agree with it. But laws are made for the benefit of the population as a whole, even if a speed limit might impede your rushed trip to work etc. We simply cannot pick and chose which laws we chose to obey.

I abhor those who overtake or break the speed limit just because there isn't a speed camera or police car around, and show that they think what they want is more important the safety of local residents. What breathtaking arrogance!

You've been brainwashed by the government and all these adverts, lol.

The laws on speed limits were wrote absolutely missions ago when most cars couldn't even do 70....

Justice gone mad. The video on that link says effectively that he was let off because his "elite" driving skills had not been taken into consideration. surely that just goes against everything we are taught both as new and advanced drivers (IAM etc).

his reaction to a question in the first trial annoyed me "You have been let of as you are a police driver?". No comment

I might add I have nothing against police drivers but in that case surely there is no question he is guilty.

end of rant
But the case is whether it was dangerous driving, is it not? Therefore his skill and ability is obviously relevant.

Not saying that I agree with him getting off scott free, but there area few points. Speed doesnt necessarily = dangerous driving.
Police pursuit drivers are exceptionally well trained, and they do some crazy speeds to prepare for chases. If you are training these drivers, they dont stick to the speed limits, because the training would be ineffective. All this is legal as it comes under 'a policing purpose'. The reason he wasn't charged with speeding was because when for a policing purpose, he is allowed to speed.

The prosecutions case was that, his speed was so excessive it became dangerous, the prosecution failed to prove that simply travelling at that speed in those conditions, was inherantly dangerous. His years of training and experience would be a factor here.

Having said that, 159mph is totally unnecessary, since no police force would authorise a pursuit at those speeds. Although not criminally convicted, if I recall, his force did discipline him appropriately.

But speed limits are nothing to do with the capabilities of cars or their drivers, but to protect other road users and residents!

The law is the law is the law.

You can't just pick and chose what to comply with , it's part of being a responsible adult, and not just thinking about yourself.

If you disagree with any kind of law lobby your MP, local councillor, local authority, pressure group etc, but meanwhile you should comply or suffer the consequences. In the case of speed limits I sincerely hope someone else doesn't have to suffer the consequences of your actions as well.

Or would you be happy for other laws to be ignored by those who think they can pick and chose if one of your loved ones came to harm?
on an open 30 road, my limit is 40
