There needs to be a "blanket" of trees on the same height level to maximise interception, as this will give the effect of total coverage.

Taller trees will intercept precip faster, but a lot will still run off onto the lower layers of the forest.

Yep, gives potential for more ecosystems to develop - don't forget the many levels underneath.

There is also a larger surface area exposed to uptake and intercept water, although the canopy beneath does the most of the intercepting in the long run
