Tax Rebate

After having scoured the HM Customs and Income Tax websites and whatnot, I am still at a loss. I've been charged emergency rate tax for some work I've done over the past year and so want to reclaim, as by the end of this tax year I will not have succeeded the total annual limit [something like £5096]. And apparently this is quite easy to do! Except 'tis not going so smoothly for me

I haven't been able to find a form and subsequently what I must do with one [after filling it in, of course]. I know there are numbers and stuff, I did try ringing the helpdesk or whoever they are but was met with, "We're the Cardiff office so we can't help you." Twice.

I also can't seem to find a local tax office, which seems rather ridiculous. The Cardiff office didn't know either, heh.

So! If you have any helpful information it would be much appreciated

I think I had to call the glasgow office and they sent me a form about my work history. next thing I got sent through was a cheque with my rebate!
if you are in work at the moment with a company try going to the wages place and asking them for advice.

if you wait until April 5, you can use the R40 form http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/students/fagr40.shtml - in the note box just write something along the lines of you didn't reach your tax allowance so shouldn't have paid tax

if you're still in work then ask your employer what their tax office is as it's that office you'll need to send your claim to rather than the one that is local to you. If you've left you should have a P45 which should have a tax office number on something (three digits/3 other numbers&letters) and search for it on the inland revenue website using the first three digits only http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/local/individuals/index.htm

hope that makes sense

That's the one thing that I've always known; April 5th = end of tax year, cos it's also my bday :p: What a way to remember when our budgets are up  At least it ensures a party at the end of each financial year, heh.

Ooh, so; I fill in that form stating I didn't reach my tax allowance. I am currently in work (contracted through a social care agency but work with my boss elsewhere) - so, I'd need to ring the head office and get their tax [office] no.?

Coool  Ta.

I used http://www.TAXFIX.co.uk to get my tax back.

It only took them 4 weeks to get my tax back and when I did the rebate was over 1000 pounds so I was very happy.

I think the government take enough of our taxes as it is, so make sure you get your tax refund, either do it yourself or go through a company like http://www.TAXFIX.co.uk if you cant be bothered.
