I've accepted my place there. The food and accomodation seemed pretty nice at the open day.

First of all, congrats for getting into Mildert: a lively, friendly, picturesque and generally awesome college! For most people, life on a day-to-day basis is largely chilled; it involves copious amounts of socialising and tea, and supposedly "going" to lectures. You get to pursue your own interests really!

Secondly, the food is mostly rubbish, although I don't think that's a point exclusive to our college; poor quality college food is a university wide issue. Sure, you'll by no means go hungry, but considering how much you're paying for accomodation, I think they could muster up something better! The food, in a word, is bland. Flavourless curries, boiled to death veg, yellow roast potatoes and tons of chips are the order of the day, every day. And secondly, at Mildert we have this annoying points system which limits your already poor choice - remember kids, only one item out of the cooling cabinet, be it a miniscule carton of juice or cheese and bloody biscuits. That's just an example of course; amongst other things on our 'desert' menu there's yoghurts, cakes, fruit, doughnuts and fruit... but never all on the same day.

Anyway, that's my food rant over.

Aside from that - you'll really have a brilliant time at Mildert!

And don't forget the ducks!

I'm afraid wild dogs couldn't keep me away from my lectures, I've got the feeling I'll get really into my studies. (As far as attending all my lectures, I'll probably spend more time at the bar in my free time.) :p:

Plenty of tea sounds right up my street though!

Is it the same story for the food on formals? Or do they pull out the stops a little bit and put on a terrific meal?

Many musicians around the college/university? I've had my heart set on starting a band of some sort when I go to uni for a while now (I play guitar) and I remember being told about the swank new music kit at Mildert... Though I've only seen mention of orchestral instruments around the website...

Yeah, you say that now....

With regard the food, it is better now than it used to be (seriously). It always used to be fairly easy to get away with taking more points. Don't know how easy it is now though, will find out next year hopefully.

I am not at Mildert but I'm sure the food isn't as bad as Foxius seems to suggest. There are a few very fussy people who will complain about anything if they can....the food is good quality to be fair and offers quite a bit of variety. Though as I say, I'm at Trevs and it's really good here!

Next time you're eating your "crap" food just think about what you have and what the majority of people in the world (don't) have, puts a bit of perspective on it.

Sure mate, we can all sit round the fire and be relative about anything, but the point I making was that the food we get doesn't, in my opinion, reflect how much we're paying for the whole 'fully-catered' package.

Oh, and I never used the term 'crap', so don't make it look as if you're quoting me by wrapping it up in quotations.

I haven't been to many formals so far this year, but I hear that it's marginally better then... you do have to pay extra for most formals though.

As for starting a band, you shouldn't have much of a problem. There's a few other threads relating to this subject (check out the 'Guitarsoc' one), but basically, every other person you'll meet will probably play a musical instrument of some kind. And yes, we have a cool new recording studio in Mildert.... it is nice.

What sort of mad physicist actually goes to all their contact hours? I may have been biased by the influence of Rob,but seriously.

Kev: Food in college could be done so,so so much better. If my experience in America has taught me anything, it's that.

I do agree that in my first year the food wasn't worth what I was paying for it (at Castle). I don't know about now, hopefully next year when I live back in it will be better, I've heard it's improved. And anyone who knows me will tell you I'm not a fussy eater. I eat almost everything!! BUt I do like my veg to be green and not soggy, grey much. I mean, is that really too much to ask?

Hmmm, maybe this is why Trevs food came out on top from a recent survey done in all the colleges.

I never knew food at other colleges was so bad - really there are few complaints about Trevs food, and if they are they're only about like "one off" incidents....the veg is nice

Well, they've employed a new chef at Castle since my first year and the formals I've been to whils living out, the food has imrpoved loads, I hope it's the same for normal food though! However, meals will forever be known as 'ming' no matter how good they are. :p:

Catered food, no matter what the budget still has some 'institutional' quality, so correspondingly people will always complain. However, at UCSB where the budget is far higher, they do a much better joof not only providing good food but also providing healthy food.

I do

NB: the above may have been a lie
The food at Mildert isn't as bad as Foxius makes out. It was last term but it's improved this term. The weekday lunches are really good, loads of choice and generally reasonable quality stuff. But weekend tea is Crap with a capital C. And weekday dinners could also be better although they're not that bad. Brunch on a Saturday at 11am is excellent imho.
