Do you have to....
As a sussex student, how important would you say it is to use sites like facebook and bebo and myspace. To this day I have never bothered with any of these sites, though its dawning on me that i might miss out on the social side a bit- I hope its not the case, as I'm not really into the idea of splashing my face all over the net, but i can see that it is a way of meeting up with people and maybe I should swallow my pride when I get to uni and just get a profile. But only if I think I need one.....

Re: Do you have to....
Many people do but you definitely don't have to. I find that its a nice (free) way of keeping in contact and is great for finding old friends but 2/5 of my housemates don't have facebook or myspace and it doesn't do them any harm! Oh and you can alter your privacy settings so only your friends can see you so the whole world doesn't have to be able to see you!

Re: Do you have to....
I always told my mates that if I ever signed up to facebook to shoot me, but its not that much of a big deal, I mean Im going Uni next year and Ive already gotten in contact with alot of old mates from school and current mates at uni, so its defo worth it.
I dont check mine alot but still its nice to see people leaving a message on your wall n stuff, you dont need a picture...i do have 1 on there but my display pic is of a dog who looks really mad...... -
Re: Do you have to....
Quite a lot of people are on facebook... and its increasing now as you don't have to be a university student to register. Its incredibly addictive - the perfect procrastination tool! You don't neccesarily need to have one - it is good though and will save you pennies on phone calls/texts!

Re: Do you have to....
It's good for forensics - working out who knows who and how, and trying to reconstruct the order events from a drunken evening by looking through a variety of photographs.
And there's the odd party invite. Far from essential, though. I use it as an extension of an existing social life, not a thing in and of itself. -

i can't believe it, after all this time scoffing at facebook i've gone and registered. i got really bored ok. it is scarily addictive, and i am officially a hypocrite.
haha, ive just gone and got a myspace too
it's ace
talk about word of mouth marketing eh -
Re: Do you have to....
I like Myspace.
I know it's all the rage to have one and to put it down, but I have one and I like it.
It's free.. unlike texting/phoning people. It's also more impersonal. If you meet someone who you're kinda friends with.. mobile number etc can be a bit intimidating... finding them on myspace is far more 'normal' seeming. -
Re: Do you have to....I guess that's the way with cynical students, the moment everyone starts talkign about anything it just ain't cool any more. I very much include myself in this hypocritical, holier-than-thou population, wouldn't have it any other way.(Original post by Thoughtcriminal31)

Re: Do you have to....I second that! The place is so big that I've only bumped into a girl that I went to college with twice since I've been here and that was in freshers week. I rarely see any of the people I added on myspace/ ********** before I came here, apart from one who became one of my best mates, but we only realised we'd previously added eachother on ********** quite a while after making friends in real life..! Maybe it's my timetable but I bump into the same people all the time and others once in a blue moon!(Original post by RichSwitch)
It's not at all important. You can make friends on here during the time before coming to Uni and never actually get to meet them.
