hey,

teachers should explain your situation in their references (although you must make sure that they do when the time comes to apply)

you will probably be able to mention these obstacles in your personal statement, although you'd better check with an admissions tutor on that one - perhaps you should email someone at oxford about it?
I think it would be worthwhile to bring it up to whoever will be assessing your application. If you get interviewed at your college of choice and your tutors interviewing you bring up the subject of grades, you might want to explain these extenuating circumstances.

Anyway, if you are invited for an interview you definitely stand a chance. Just read as widely as you can and prepare really really hard for your interview. I know some sites that share free past interview questions (PM me for details) so make sure you can answer all of them and come prepared while having a general sense of what they might ask.

A good reference, admission tests results etc all go a long way too :smile:
