I'm really late to the party but this thread helped me figure the problem out on my own. Using geometry, make a free body diagram. The x and y axis will show the vector d at 45 degress from the x axis. So the distance x that each spring has traveled is 2d cos(45) -_-
It's just vector components. Mine wanted it in radians so I answered as 2d cos(pi/4)
