Optometry-post graduate propects?

Hi,

I am interested in applying for Optometry as one of my options for uni. This seems a logical idea as I have worked at an optometrists for 2 years and know what it entails...(Or so I think, you watch I bet i know nothing!:biggrin::biggrin:)

I know most graduates go on to do their 1 year undergrad placement before qualifying fully with GOC. And then generally work for a hospital, or practice.

But my question is what can you do in terms of research after getting this degree. Can you continue to do a phD and research in this field?
Or, if you want to go into Opthalmology do you need to go into medicine first then later specialise as you would with any other specialty of choice (I suspect it is the latter...)

Sorry if this seems a little odd, but I have never heard anyone talk of further degrees pertaining to Optometry after enrolling with the GOC. This is probably because you become a master of the subject when you finish your pre-reg year, but what is available after this..?

regards x

EDIT: now i come to think of it, Opthalmology deals with Pathology of the eye so obviously you would need a med degree for that !<ignore that part of the post lol.... but i still would be interested to hear how ppl find the course, and the job prospects upon completion.
It really depends on what univeristy you go to in terms of the employment prospects.

Check out the following link:

I have found them to be very useful in terms of such information.

Also, have a look at http://www.prospects.ac.uk/

They specialise in postgraduate opportunities.
You don't become a master of the subject on getting your PQEs do you? You get MCOptom after your name, which is Member of the College of Optometrists... Not master of Optometry.

There are a number of Masters degrees available, not specifically in Optometry. But Manchester offer Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science.

But I agree... www.prospects.ac.uk is the place to look!

Try a similar post in an Optometry forum I moderate on admissionsforum

Hope that helps...
Thank you for the admissions forum link!
