Article 48 and Hitler

So I'm preparing for my mock exams coming up soon, and in history we've been taught that Article 48 in the German constitution meant that the President, Hindenburg, could pass laws under decree without consent from the Reichstag- but I also found that Hitler is often said to have used the article. As Hitler was chancellor, how was he able to use article 48 to pass the enabling act?
