Which accommodation is best for parties?

Hi, I am looking to go to Greenwich in 2016. I was just wondering what accommodation is best for socialising and parties. I like the look of the student village at Avery Hill, but there is no information about the Daniel Defoe accommodation. Which has a better communal area and where's best to stay?

As far as I know, both halls have a good social life. The student village at Avery Hill is very close to sparrows farm which houses the student union bar. The student village is more self contained than Daniel Defoe, so noise is not as much of an issue as it is on campus as opposed to being in halls in a more residential area like Daniel Defoe. It's all down to personal preference though and which subject you're studying, might be worth going to an open day and doing a tour to really make up your mind.

I'd definetly recommend the Daniel Defoe halls, I stayed in them this year and enjoyed it so much!
They are a lot more nicer looking than the other halls of residence and are spacious, I had a standard ensuite and could fit a double air bed into my room.
Each flat has a kitchen which is a great place to socialise with everyone as you are given sofas as well as a dining table.
Most people I met were up for parties and there would always be one every week within the halls.
Belushis bar is a five min walk away too which is always packed on weekends.
I had a friend that was in Avery Hill and didn't enjoy it as much as it was far to travel to central London to clubs and the free bus to Greenwich doesn't run on weekends, people in Avery Hill are limited to Sparrows bar unless they are willing to travel 40-50 mins to Central.

I am also going to hopefully be going to Greenwich and I was wondering whether the SU is very active?
Also I'm a bit worried about all the negative things I have read about Greenwich Uni e.g, lecturers, facilities, status, I was wondering if you could give me your opinion?

Thank you

Hey there, I was a student at Greenwich studying history and dropped out after 3 months. I guess it all depends on what course you will be studying, most people doing media and architecture courses seemed to enjoy their course and were taught in the latest Stockwell Street building with all the new lecture halls and equipment. However I was mainly in the Greenwich campus and found half of my lectures were given in classrooms rather than theatres and staff seemed very unorganised, I wasn't enjoying my course so I made the decision to reapply to a different university for the following year.
The student union at Greenwich is ok, the building itself isn't great and most people only go there for cheap pre drinks and it's quite small.
I joined two societies and events were organised occasionally, however not many people seemed involved, the sports teams are very popular.

Thank you for your reply

So did you not enjoy your course or was it the Uni that made you want to leave?
I was at Reading but left as I didn't enjoy my course, however the advertising marketing communication with language at Greenwich is what I hope to study at Greenwich and it sounds good. I'm just worried as i've heard i'll only be in Uni 3 times a week, lots of people have said it's a poor Univeristy and i'm worried the night life will be a bit dead.

I wasn't enjoying the course, there were only 40 people on my course too which just made it seem really boring and not worth paying for something I wasn't enjoying.
In regards to time spent in lectures I was only timetabled in for 3 days a week and one of those days was for 2hours, this was the case for the majority of my flat mates too. However the new library in Stockwell St is really useful when you need to study and get on with work after lectures and the days you have off will be useful when you're loaded with assignments.
The nightlife is Greenwich was pretty dead, most people go to Belushis on weekends or throw flat parties. The majority travel to Central for nights out, the main student night is Tuesday and Ministry of Sound is normally a great night.
It all depends on whether you are willing to travel 30-40 mins into central to go out.
Whilst there I found my friends who were in central city locations had a much better experience with nightlife.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I am struggling to understand why I want to pay £9000 for a 3 day a week course. I'll probably be working more than ill be at the uni. Would you say it wouldn't be worth it going to Greenwich? Can I asked what you studied?
Yeah tuition fee is ridiculous, not work the 9K at all in my opinion.
It might be the same at other universities too, make sure you check those out before making your mind up. I studied history, I don't want my negative experience to influence others, Greenwich was definetly a great place to live, but not so much to study, I'd reccommend emailing the admissions tutor for your course and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to answer any concerns. What course are you planning to study?

I'm hoping to study advertising, marketing communications and Spanish. Yes I understand it's just that i've heard from many people negative things about Greenwich and it's just making me worried about my decision. When I was at Reading I was at uni every day for at least 5 hours so I'm worried I'll be comparing the experience the whole time
I got unconditional offers from uni of greenwich in film studies and criminology and criminal psychology. I´ve only heard/read good things about greenwich but this made me worried! I´m foreign and currently living in Finland so I don´t know much about greenwich or any other unis. Am I making a mistake going to greenwich?? : o
Hi, I'm Laura and I currently study Sociology and Psychology at the University of Greenwich and I'm a student ambassador. I am in my final year now and I am coming back in September to study PGCE Primary Education.

The contact hours at University may seem low but this is because there are a certain amount of hours that you will need to dedicate to self study for each module. This includes, preparing your coursework and weekly readings.

Every one has a different experience at every University because every one is looking for different things from a University. Greenwich is a beautiful place to live and although there are not any clubs in Greenwich there are loads of pubs within walking distance with cheap drinks.

With regards to accommodation, I lived in Cutty Sark halls for my first year and loved it! It is within walking distance of the University, it has great transport links and there are shops nearby for your weekly food shop.

I don't have much knowledge of Avery Hill accommodation but I know that it is more lively and Sparrows (the student bar/club) is on site. There are weekly events, including: foam parties; Nandos and Pizza Hut nights; and nights where snakes and other creepy crawlies are brought in.

Choosing a University really is an individual decision, although other opinions are important, it is ultimately your decision. This is why I couldn't recommend coming to an Open Day more. It will give you the opportunity to talk to academics from the programme, talk to current students and also take campus and accommodation tours.

If you have any more questions then please let me know and I will try my best to help

Please Laura, Cutty Sark halls, is it nearby to maritime campus, I was given an unconditional offer letter to study public health as an international student, right now I wish to live outside the campus. Do you know anyone that wish to share his accommodation or any room that is available for rent now?
