Bee Ltd has been successfully producing finehoney in Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. The honey is sold in pretty jars,which according to Bee Ltd’s market research, should attract a wide range of consumersfrom many different cultures and backgrounds. Wishing to develop the businessfurther, Bee Ltd has started exporting their products in other Member Statesbut has encountered the following issues:In Germany, a law requires that all foodstuff besold with an indication of the country of origin. Bee Ltd fears that consumersmay be prejudiced against imported products. Belgium has strict regulations on the sugarcontent of various products including honey. Bee Ltd, which always adds aportion of sugar to guarantee the sweetness of its products would not fitwithin the Belgian appellation of honey. When Bee Ltd contacts the authoritiesfor further clarification, it is told that Bee Ltd’s products are overly sweetand thus detrimental to public health and that they are inevitably of aninferior quality than pure 100% honey. Ultimately, the description of honey ismisleading for the Belgian consumer whose palate isn’t used to such degree ofsweetness. The authorities suggest that Bee Ltd product be sold under the nameof “sugar paste” and with a large sticker displayed on the pretty jars urgingconsumption of the product ‘in moderation’. Unless such a label can beattached, the sale of Bee Ltd products will be banned from Belgium.In Ireland, all British honey is bannedfollowing public outrage at the living conditions of bees in England ashighlighted by a recent TV documentary. In Portugal the advertising of honey in women’smagazine is prohibited because of the risks associated with giving honey toyoung babies.
