Why does homophobia still exist?

- The vast majority of gay people go out about their daily business without affecting others in any way.
- What gay people do in their own private lives does not affect anyone else in any way.
- Gay people are not a collective organisation with the same ideology and aspirations.
- Homosexuality causes no objective harm upon society.
- Gay people pay their taxes like everyone else, and many gay people have shaped our society (see Alan Turing).

So why does homophobia still exist?

I guess a better question would be ''Why does homophobia exist?'' and then work from that.

I expect much of the remaining homophobia in the UK comes from upbringing. And the parents of homophobic people got their homophobic ideas from their own parents, who got it from their parents, who got it from their parents...

Perhaps some people still need someone/something to hate and gay people are just an easy target.

Or maybe homophobic people are actually gay themselves and are just too afraid to admit it. Or maybe they went through a really bad break up!
Meh, for the same reason racism or anti semitism or any kind of prejudice exists. People are ****.

Parenting passing on outdated values
Groups of people gaining viewpoints from their own cliques/subcultures
Religion/Religious members passing on their intolerance
Unfair representation in the media (not really a problem in the UK, but most likely in other countries)
Countries maintaining nonsensical laws against homosexuality

etc.

Those are probably the reasons why some people are still very intolerant towards the matter, with religion in my opinion being the most prominent.

If you heard of the term 'hates gonna hate'
then that's the answer to why all the -ism and phobias are there.

I hate snakes and spiders with a passion

Gay is okay but don't go overboard in public

I think homophobia still exists because we still have remnants of a sexist and patriarchal society. LGBTs go against everything that is masculine... 'homophobia is the fear that a man will treat you in the same way that you treat women'.

If a girl is a lesbian, she threatens a guy's masculinity because he is unable to satisfy her. Hence why all lesbians are categorised as either 'cool' [porn] lesbians, because she might still be interested (spoiler: she's not) or 'dykes' -. Even when a woman clearly writes off all men by identifying as gay, people still feel the need to class them based on their attractiveness and perceived availability.

This is exactly why being a gay man used to be illegal whereas being a gay woman never was - it was just incomprehensible that anything not involving a penis could be classed as 'sex'.

If a guy is gay, he threatens a guy's masculinity because he challenges the image you have of yourself as a macho Neanderthal who is separated from women by binary gender classifications.

And yeah, homophobics are not just men. Women subscribe to this too, for much the same reasons.

Luckily this is dying out. As we have become a more gender equal society we have also become a less homophobic society. It's not long before homophobes and misogynists die out, together.

They can go as overboard as straight people.

People like to look down upon people to make themselves feel as if they're better; sadly there degenerates out there that pick on qualities that people have and are uncontrollable, to look down upon and make them feel better. These people are usually the uneducated, ignorant fools.

Exactly! But I don't get the part about looking down upon people, good one though.

Because some people are d*cks.

I recoil when I see public displays of affection between two men.
I don't think there's anything wrong with homosexuality though. It's likely just a result of my upbringing.

Because some people don't like it. It's surely only homophobic if they either 1. Fear gayness. 2. Discriminate towards gay people.

I swear homophobia in straight men stems from the knowledge that their gay counterparts get far more blowjobs and butt action.

If the reason that people look down on certain others is because it makes them feel better it still doesn't actually explain why they pick on homosexuals .

I mean everyone looks down on paedophiles .Isnt that enough to satisfy such people? Why out of countless other groups do they pick on homosexuals?

There are many groups I look down on -people who vote, middle aged men who still get upset when their team loses, people who watch the X factor, people who go to the cinema, landlords,Little Englanders, women who take ages to pay in queues etc etc - but I don't look down on them because it makes me feel better,I look down on them because I think they are all stupid.Except for landlords who are just plain horrid.

But I don't look down on homosexuals because I don't think they are stupid unless they watch the X factor or vote etc.

You appear to look down on the uneducated or ignorant judging from the tone of your last sentence but do you enjoy it?

Unless there's something unusual about your upbringing I doubt that that's the reason you recoil on seeing public displays of affection between homosexuals.

I'd guess that it is in fact a natural reaction.

Some good valid reasons there.

But the main reason that homophobia will likely always exist is because to some extent heterosexual males find the idea of men sleeping with each other repugnant.

Perhaps in another 10,000 years of evolution that will disappear though.
Some people believe it's unnatural and a illness that needs to be cured.
Because people just don't like the idea of people being gay. It's different, and people don't like different
Personally I don't really mind, but I don't really like seeing gays kiss or hug in public, as I am heterosexual. Then again I don't like seeing normal people kiss either lol.
I predicted there would be a thread in trending about this.
