Same, but with software engineering. I haven't heard anything though. Where else did you apply?

I've got offers from Lancaster, Nottingham, Northumbria and Swansea.

So what made you choose Software Engineering? The General CS degree you have more flexibility to do the exact same degree just without the compulsory modules, so you can change your mind about things later down?

So have you done any programming before? Made anything yet ?

Well done for getting the offers? Did you have an interview?

I'm a bit of a weird candidate. I'm applying for medicine as well and so computer science is sort of my backup to be honest. I know Python, Java to a fair level. I'm doing machine learning course

You are a weird candidate! Medicine & CS? A bit of a jump, haha!

I hope you've done well in both, either career seems like it could become really worthwhile.

I also had to do the informal interview, but you seem like a really strong candidate, chances are you'll get an unconditional as your predictions exceed entry and you're doing pretty much, the perfect subjects (I hate you). I wrote my PS, made my choices of Uni, and applied in the first week of October. They got back to me quite fast, but that was because I applied way before the rush of UCAS applications.

I have applied to the following for computer science
Manchester: offered an interview
Newcastle: offered an interview
KCL:AAB
Surrey: ABB
Lancaster: ABB

What about you?

For my firm choice I'm stuck between Manchester and Newcastle. Manchester is ranked higher in world rankings but NCL has a much better course
Insurance choice will be Surrey or KCL.

Newcastles course made it for me. I would go with whichever you believe you would enjoy doing most for the next 3 years. Manchester is ranked higher but they're all top 20 unis, and the difference between Manchester and Newcastle is very little, and it's superficial anyway. I would also look at funding opportunities, Newcastle is more generous on this side, accomodation costs, lecturers and they're work, quality of computer labs etc.

I don't know much about Manchester but I hear it's very good anyway.

I personally loved Newcastle when I visited but don't let me sway you, your opinion on the modules are probably whats most important as you're going to be doing them, and if you enjoy them you're much more likely to do better, which is ultimately what counts the most (how well you think you'll do at each place).

Well, you said you were applying for medicine + CS so how did you fit that on your PS so well lol? What are your A levels, predictions, AS grades etc?

I didn't even know you could send in two PS! You'll be fine with offers, I'm about 80% sure you'll get one with those grades.

Name: Chaye
AS Subjects: BTEC Extended Diploma in IT (first year), Welsh Baccalaureate
AS Grades: D*D*
A2 Predicted: D*D*D* A*
Location: Swansea
Offer conditions: D*DD B

Currently contemplating over whether to firm Newcastle or Swansea, but Newcastle's course is just so much more interesting arrrgh.

Currently working on several side projects, one of which is based off something I seen some students at Newcastle doing. Utilising a biofeedback device as a controller paired with an Arduino. Except, I thought I'd challenge myself by making the biofeedback device myself rather than using a third party solution like they did.

However, I'm currently doing research into the gaming situation at the university's accommodation as if it is not possible to game (without VPN anyway) then I don't think I can attend there.

A VPN setup cost me $4 p/m to route traffic through my friends hosting company. Very few unis allow you unrestricted access so a VPN is best anyway. It's also so much more secure lol.

It's not the VPN that's the issue per se, it's more the effects of it. Due to the way their network is setup, you'd need to connect to their VPN and then your VPN, which would mean a major increase to your ping. I mainly play FPS games like CoD, Halo and CS:GO in which that ping increase would affect drastically. As far as I know (from reading online anyway) most universities allow for gaming on their network.

Academic connections have that sweet ultra low ping. You would probably have to sarifice about 30ms but I expect that to be it really. Also depending on the VPN connection too but the ping most likely won't be greater than 60ms, and that won't really hamper you gaming.

There are a few ways you can go if the ping is too high;

1) Learn to play offline
2) Go to a gaming cafe and rent it out
3) LAN
4) Quit gaming

I've heard of people finding a few ways to circumvent the gaming restriction so if I were you I'd have a look but otherwise I can't really help you lol.

Thanks man, appreciate the advice. To be fair, I think I'm just trying to give myself reasons not to go haha, one of which was that Swansea has a dedicated gaming network.

Lol but gaming is trivial in comparison to getting a greater education - is being able to game a lot for the next 9 months more important than getting a better education?

Besides you'd probably spend more time doing work, socialising, getting healthy and getting better grades, if you weren't gaming; but who wants that?

Plus you can game just at like 80ms or something I mean it's not that bad haha
