Hi Alice,

I love Nottingham as a city. I come from Newcastle (which is known for being a lively and busy city) and I find Nottingham just as lively! Nottingham is a very "student" city with two big universities in it (NTU and the University of Nottingham). What I love about Nottingham is the amount of space there is in the city centre (have you seen Market Square?), as it's such a big space, and loads of events take place there (Christmas Market/The Nottingham Beach) which are nice to wander around.

In regards to bookshops, I only really use Waterstones/WHSmith's (which Nottingham has both). There is also a The Works bookshop next to Primark. I haven't really explored Independent bookshops. There was one which I think was called Five Leaves Bookshop, which was up an alley next to The Works, however I don't know much about it. There is also a charity shop which sells a lot of books which I have used in the past (I think it was an Oxfam) which was on Market Street.

I am a foodie also, so I know a lot about the restaurants of Nottingham! Nottingham's Victoria Centre has recently expanded with lots of new restaurants opening up so there has been a huge expansion in the number of restaurants in Notts! We have loads of Chain restaurants (Nandos, Wagamama's, Chiquito's etc.) and a lot of independent food places as well (Thaikhun, Annies Burger Shack, Oscar's & Rosies, Red's True BBQ etc.) I never run out of places to try!

If you have any more questions about uni life or Nottingham in general, please let me know!

I hope this helps!

Thanks,

Ellen

Hi Alice,

Byron is lovely, and so close to everything, but depending on which block you choose depends on how loud it is. If you choose one of the blocks directly above the SU then it can get quite loud!

However, not every block of Byron is directly above the SU! My friend lived in Byron and she was in a separate building to the left of the SU, so it really depends on what block you choose.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have anymore questions!

Thanks,

Ellen

Hi Lucy,

Congratulations on your offer! :h:

I'm afraid we don't have any scholarships/bursaries for students who have achieved higher grades than the entry requirements. I'll link you below to the scholarships/bursaries we have available for undergraduate students:

Scholarships/Bursaries

Both Gill Street accommodations (Gill Street North and Gill Street South) are very lively and good for social life! In fact, all of our City site accommodation is!

The main difference between the Gill Street Halls of Residences is that Gill Street South is a newer residence and therefore more modern (which reflects in the price). It is also slightly nearer to the University buildings (with Gill Street North you have to walk a bit further up the hill to the next street up). However in regards to liveliness/social life there is no difference, and both are very popular residences for freshers!

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions please let me know!

Thanks,

Ellen

Hi LucentDoughnut98,

As NTU receives lots of applications, we only allow students who have put us as their firm choice to book our accommodation. If on results day you don't receive the results needed for your firm choice, and NTU becomes your firm choice, then you will be able to book our accommodation.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have anymore questions!

ANY CLUBS/PUBS/RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE IN NOTTS?: I've visited once before and the selection of pubs/clubs is mint.
ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK ELLEN?: When does the Sociology course start in September? I've been told a couple of different answers, I guess its better to know early-ish

Hi callumatkins,

I can't give you an exact date on when your course starts, but I can tell you that Welcome Week begins on Friday 23 September, so there is a chance you may have a few induction sessions on the week commencing Monday 26 September.

However, officially Term 1 doesn't start until 3 October 2016. So basically your course will start properly on this week.

I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions!

ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK ELLEN?: I've got a conditional offer for both criminology and law with criminology, not sure which one to firm yet so I'm waiting for the offer holder open days to make my decision. I was just wondering about the demand of the studio rooms at the accomodation as I'd quite like my own space ( but also be able to socialise) but unconditional offer holders can book accomodation first so what are the chances of the studio rooms all being booked up? Also, as I'm not to familiar with the area is there any places you would recommend visiting?
Thankyou!

Hi Amy,

Congratulations on your offers!! :h:

There are usually studio rooms left in Gill Street North for students with Conditional Firm offers to book, but I obviously can't guarantee this. Also, I just thought I'd make you aware that the Gill Street North Studio's have 51 week contracts, while most of our other types of rooms are only 44 weeks. So you will be able to move into your flat a bit earlier than others, but it does mean you will have to pay your rent for longer, making it more expensive than our 44 weeks.

Also, our studio's are self-contained (meaning they have their own en-suite and a small kitchen), this means they do not have a communal area to meet other students, like you would in a flat. If you want a communal area to meet other students, I would recommend looking at the en-suite bedrooms, as you have your own bathroom but share a kitchen, making it easier to meet new people!

Regarding the recommendations in Nottingham, I'll list places in categories to make things easier:

Restaurants/Cafe's:
Annie's Burger Shack (In Lace Market, over 30 burger's to choose from!)
Thaikhun (A new Thai restaurant in Victoria Centre, it's nice to try if you want something different)
Pudding Pantry (Does fantastic cakes and treats in there, and also a decent breakfast!)

Bars/Clubs:
Rock City: Rock City on Thursday is personally my favourite night out in Nottingham! It also has quite a lot of bands/groups play there!
Ocean: Ocean Wednesday is VERY popular for societies/clubs at NTU. If you like going out on a messy night out!
Coco Tang: More of a classier night out, does some awesome cocktails!

General:
Market Square's Christmas Market: I know this is seasonal, but it is really worth a visit! There are some awesome food stalls selling unusual food like Ostrich Burgers! It really puts you in a festive mood!
The Lost City Adventure Golf: In the Corner House, if you like adventure golf, it's pretty cool to go there for something different!
Planet Bounce: I haven't personally visited here yet, but I really want to go! Basically a "trampoline park" another cool thing to try if you fancy something different!

I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks,

Ellen

Hi Dan,

Clifton is not the most "studenty" area! I don't personally know a lot about which areas of Nottingham Clifton students decide to live in when looking at private accommodation, but these are the area's I know and recommend:

Arboretum
City centre
Forest Fields
Lace Market
Lenton
West Bridgford

There are many other areas of Nottingham you can live in, (other "studenty" ones as well) but these are the ones that I personally know about. If you are worried about getting to Clifton campus, we do have a bus service that runs from the city centre straight to Clifton campus, which runs really regularly (every 7 minutes during peak lecture times). I can give you more information about this bus service if you are interested?

College Drive is an extremely affordable residence, and right on Clifton campus, which is a bonus! If you don't know Nottingham, it's a great starting place to live while you get to know Nottingham and a bit more about the area's to live. It is also a very safe residence to live as it's on campus! I think these are the advantages of College Drive over private accommodation. :h:

If you have any more questions please let me know!

Thanks,

Ellen

Hi Dan,

WHICH ACCOMMODATION ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?: not sure if I'm staying at home and commuting yet but either Peverell or New Hall if I do stay on campus
WHICH SOCIETY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?: defiantly the history one, possibly Disney one and a few others
ANY CLUBS/PUBS/RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE IN NOTTS?: I'm not a drinker or partygoer really so I haven't looked or know of any even though I only live down the road :')
ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK ELLEN?: I do have a few questions to ask if that's okay.
Firstly, with living only a few miles down the road would you recommend staying at home and commuting or moving into halls?
Secondly, do you know roughly how many times I would be at uni during the day? I have a friend that goes there already and she does 1 full day, half a day and then 2 hours on a Friday.
Thirdly, are there any jobs you can get on campus like in the library? I know one uni I looked at liked their history students to work in their library and archives but I can't remember which one :')

Thank you

Hi Hattie,

Yay, congratulations! I'm glad you finally heard back from us! :h:

Firstly, with living only a few miles down the road would you recommend staying at home and commuting or moving into halls?

Commuting versus living in halls is all down to personal preference, and completely your decision. There are advantages/disadvantages to both! I personally came to NTU from Northumberland, which is a three and half hour long journey (if the traffics good!) and I have loved living away from home and having the increased independence that comes with this! However for others, this might not be the case.

A lot of students commute to save money, as they don't have to pay as much for rent and living costs, and then they don't have to get such a big loan from Student Finance. So, if you would like to save money then commuting might be a good idea. However, it may be annoying to travel in and out of university (for example, if you have a lecture between 12-1 and then another between 3-4, is it worth you going back home?) Do you mind having to hang around campus?

However, a lot of students live on campus to get the 'full university experience' (learn to live independently away from their parents, meet new friends, go out party/socialise). You can also stay in bed a little bit longer as it will take you literally less than 5 minutes to get to lectures/seminars! If that's the experience you would like, then living in halls might be a good idea. However, University halls of residences are often very loud (especially the first few weeks after Freshers!) and some people struggle with this!

Secondly, do you know roughly how many times I would be at uni during the day? I have a friend that goes there already and she does 1 full day, half a day and then 2 hours on a Friday.

Again it really depends on the course you are doing! As some courses are more intense than others and you may spend more/less time at the University! Is your friend doing History? If so, you will have very similar hours to her!

I'll try and find out the contact hours for the History course and I'll get back to you!

Thirdly, are there any jobs you can get on campus like in the library? I know one uni I looked at liked their history students to work in their library and archives but I can't remember which one?

Again, I haven't personally heard about History students being encouraged to work in the library, but I am not very knowledgeable in that area! I do know there is a job going in the library at the moment, which looks suitable for students! I'll link it below. So I would encourage you, if you do want to work in the library, to regularly look on our staff vacancies!

Library Position

I do know there is a lot of positions available for students at the uni, from being a student ambassador, to working in our uni Costa, or working in the Student's union doing bar work. There are lots of positions available!

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions please let me know!

Thanks,

Ellen
