NTU offer holders 2016

Hi guys,

Quite a lot of you guys have started receiving your offers and are thinking of which uni to make your first choice. So I thought this thread might be quite fun for you to get to know a bit more about Nottingham as a city, and student life at NTU before you make your decision!

I really liked @thecatwithnohat's questionnaire so I have made a very similar one below - please have a go at filling out the form and hopefully we will get some discussions going

NAME:
COURSE:
CAMPUS:
WHICH ACCOMMODATION ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?:
WHICH SOCIETY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?:
ANY CLUBS/PUBS/RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE IN NOTTS?:
ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK ELLEN?:

Thanks,

Received an unconditional which I have firmed

Name: Ayan
Course: Law LLB
Accommodation interested in: Byron
Societies interested in: No idea at the moment, will have a better grasp as time goes on.
Pubs/clubs/restaurants: Not a drinker due to personal reasons but doesn't mean I don't have a good time. Rocky city and the SU seems promising.

Lastly, I don't suppose I'll be the only one definitely arriving in September. Is there a way to meet other students beforehand?

Thank you!

COURSE: History - got an unconditional offer (if I firm it)
CAMPUS: Clifton
WHICH ACCOMMODATION ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?: Peverell
WHICH SOCIETY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?: Cocktail, Disney, History (obviously), Labour, Medieval, Politics and Wine. A whole lot! And it seems there is no Polish society :frown:
ANY CLUBS/PUBS/RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE IN NOTTS?: I haven't been yet- will be checking it out in February!
ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK ELLEN?: I know it is different for everyone, but I've always somehow had a problem making friends (maybe because I'm quiet around new people, I'm not sure), and I was wondering how easy it is to make new friends? Also, are candles allowed in rooms, or any alternatives (incense sticks, etc) or are those considered safety hazards?

Thank you!

Hi DreamerOrThinker,

How did I miss this? Very sorry for the late reply!

Congratulations on your unconditional offer! I hope you are looking forward to getting here, I had a few friends who lived in Byron and they loved it there!

The best way to meet other students would be via our social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter. I'll link you to our main social media sites below:

Our Social Media

We also have other social media pages, such as our accommodation pages, which you be invited to once you have booked your accommodation. These are a great way to meet your flatmates and neighbours!

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks,

Ellen

Hi Weronika,

Congratulations on your unconditional offer! I hope you are very proud! :h:

University in general is a very easy environment to make friends. Most people are usually in a completely new city, where they have never lived before, and have no friends in that city before moving to halls. So everyone is desperate to make friends!

Personally, I am a little bit like you, a bit wary of new people and a bit quiet. However, everyone I met was lovely and I really got on with my flatmates so I settled in and made friends quite quickly! Also, looking at the amount of societies you are planning on joining, you will have plenty of opportunities to meet and talk to new people!

I'm afraid that candles/incense sticks are not allowed in halls, as they are a fire hazard. I would recommend reed diffusers as an alternative, as they make your room smell nice and there is no danger :h:

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions let me know!

Thanks,

Ellen

WHICH ACCOMMODATION ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?: Not sure...
WHICH SOCIETY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?: Film, Film-Making, Photography, Wine
ANY CLUBS/PUBS/RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE IN NOTTS?: Never been!
ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK ELLEN?: Hiya, I'm in Australia so haven't had a chance to visit the university but I'd like to find out more about the different accommodation. Out of New Hall, Peverell and College Drive which has the best 'party' atmosphere/reputation? I'm very social and would love to meet like-minded people who like to drink and chat in the living area  Thank you!

Hi Emily,

Congratulations on your unconditional offer! Australia to England that's a big move! Are you looking forward to it?

If you are looking for the 'party' atmosphere I wouldn't recommend choosing College Drive as this accommodation is mainly for postgraduate/mature students. It is also quite a small residence (with only a total of 8 houses, each with three to five bedrooms).

However, both Peverell and New Hall are very popular and sociable halls! New Hall is one of our newer halls, and was built in recent years, so it is very modern! It has 576 en suite rooms and 151 studio rooms, with up to ten rooms in each flat with a shared kitchen-dining area.

Peverell is an older residence, and is divided into two crescent-shaped buildings, both with their own common room! This is great to socialise with other students! There are 720 ensuite bedrooms in this halls, and each flat has six bedrooms with a shared kitchen-dining area. So smaller flats than New Hall but with the bonus of a common room!

Both Peverell and New Hall have their advantages/disadvantages (New Hall is more expensive but more modern/Peverell has a common room but is an older building). So personally, I would weigh up the pro's and con's of each and see which is your favourite. However they are both very sociable halls, with plenty of students who want to make new friends!

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks,

Ellen

Thanks for your quick reply, yes I'm starting to get pretty excited now! Your reply was very helpful, I think I'll look into peveral...I like the idea of the smaller flats and the common room (being cheaper is a bonus too!)

Hi Tayyab,

Most of the beds are single, but at some halls they are slightly wider/longer beds than other halls. The new accommodation guide for next year should be on the website soon which has the exact sizes of the bed in metres, but I'll link you to last years for now:

COURSE: Maths (unconditional if I put it firm)

CAMPUS: Clifton

WHICH ACCOMODATION ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?: Not sure yet whether if it's best for me to go with Peverell or live in the city and travel in - advice would be appreciated!

WHICH SOCIETY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?: I do indoor rock climbing and love rock/metal/alternative music and I like maths (ofc) so if there's anything involving those three things then count me in!

ANY CLUBS/PUBS/RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE IN NOTTS?: Rock City

ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK ELLEN?:
- The accomodation question from above
- If I was to apply for Peverell, how likely am I to get it as the idea of being miles outside of any of the campuses is scary?
- Tips on making friends?
- I suffer with anxiety and I have for years, is there anything at NTU that can help me whether it's fears about living away from home for the first time and coping with that or whether it's worries that are studies-related?

Congratulations on your offer! I hope you're proud! :h:

I am going to put each question in a spoiler, just because this post will be very long otherwise!

Hi Ruth,

It really does depend. I'm guessing you have received an offer, and are talking about if you don't get the grades on results day for the offer that was made to you?

When admissions receive all the results from UCAS, they put all the people who have not received the grades for the entry requirements into groups depending on how far away they were to reaching the entry requirements (for example, 10 points, 20 points etc.)

They then have a conversation with the subject administrators for each course, and ask them if they are willing to take people who have not reached the entry requirements and, if so, by how much?

So the answer to your question is, it all depends on the course! Some courses will be willing to take on people who have not met the entry requirements, others won't. Also, if the course has asked for a specific grade (for example an A level grade at a grade B) then if you have not achieved this grade, you will most likely not be accepted to study that course at NTU.

I hope this makes sense! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks,

Ellen

Hi Keys10,

Congratulations on your unconditional offer! I hope you celebrated!!

We have a Dyslexia Support Team who offer advice and support to students who have dyslexia, this includes helping organise arrangements such as extra time in exams and helping you apply for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs), I'll link you below to more information about our Dyslexia Support Team:

We also have support for students who suffer from anxiety, I'll link to more information down below. Our Mental Health Support Team can help you explain your needs to your tutor, as well as give advice on maintaining a healthy balance at University.

In regards to the accommodation email, that is very unusual! The correct dates are on our website which I'll link to you below. Can I ask what the email was about? If you could give me the title of the email, that would be great, so I can chase this up :h:
