The Student Room Group
From what i understand, it's further training you do after your degree, usually at a university. the training is quite specific eg just one body system of a particular species. If you do an internship in some places ( i think the USA is one of them)they insist you have no debt - that's a bit tricky if you're a student!
That's my understanding but hopefully someone with more knowledge will reply with more info.

internships are usually done in big hospitals (QM in RVC, cambs vet hospital) and they specialise in specific body systems, like cardiology, radiography, osteology, internal medicine, etc. i'm interested in doing one in cardiology after i graduate. i think they last for two years and you train for european certificates ie DipECVIM for internal medicine.

You can do internships at most referral hospitals and i think all the vet schools. an internship lasts for one year, a residency for 3. e.g. equine surgery, farm animals, small animal orthopedics etc, tend to be good for if you want to become an exert or go into acadaemia, but interns go on to do all sorts and some just want to stay on awt uni to bonk the 5th years. Because a great propprtion of time is spent doing clinics and supervising students, the interns often complain that they don't get much experience themselves. another perk of an internship is that you get a tax free stipend, but certainly at Liverppol, there is A LOT of night duty involved. interns work all hours and do the poopy jobs that the cinicians don't want sometimes.

from what ive read the interships are in more general topics, then you specialise a bit more as a residency.

i fancy doing a small animal medicine and surgery internship, then a small animal surgical residency. but i kno at RVC theres only like 3 spaces for this - so it might be tough to get into.
Your not just involved in learning, but teaching and research aswell - so i think they very much lead you into an academic vet role... mainly because most are based at the vet schools.

i think they are very like internships for doctors, you get all the scut and work long hours, so yeah its probably a bit like greys anatomy if thats what ur thinkin - tho less dramatic cases maybe! lol

hope that helps

Ah okay, so if I wanted to go down the Cardiology route, would I have to do a one year internship generally, and then a three year residency in the Cardiology department? Also what's the tax free stipend you talk about, I'm very financially inept!

well you wouldn't have to but you can to further your career. A stipend is your wages for the year and is about 16k-20k depending on where you are, but is not taxed which means you take all of it home.

Goody goody! Where do you guys get all this info? Im interested in exotic/wild animal medicine sorta thing. Ive looked into doing the 1 year MSc in wild animal health with ZSL/RVC but where could I find information about internships/residencies for exotics?
