Re: Social Work!! interview
I had a group interview at Birmingham for the masters at the beginning of January. Everyone's really nice. We watched the film, split into 2 groups and just discussed the questions we'd been given. Take a pen to write notes on the question sheet (I forgot and had to ask someone to borrow one...) Then they asked us each 2 questions to answer in front of everyone (everyone was asked the same 2). I thought it had gone really badly but I've already had an offer!
Good Luck! -
Re: Social Work!! interviewOn the interview ive been to all the men had shirts and ties... but its up to you really. Whatever you feel most comfortable in(Original post by Cilz)
Thanks, so were the two questions like - Why do you want to be a social worker? or a bit more complex. Bit unsure whether to wear a suit or a shirt and tie, what were the men applyign wearing. Thanks for the help and congrats on getting accepted!

Re: Social Work!! interview
Hi everyone, half way through this thread and its been really helpful so far!!
Must give up now, been staring at the laptop for hours - not good!
Everyone seems to be applying down south. I've got interviews coming up for Leeds and Teeside.. I was wondering if anyone has applied up north?!
If not.. just any general advice? I think I'm lacking experience.. I do volunteer at my local primary school but i feel this isn't relevant to social work :/. I have just applied to volunteer also within a mental health drop-in centre for young people. hopefully this will look more impressive at the interviews??
It'll be good to hear from people also applying for SW

Hey Rochelle, I applied to Sunderland, Leeds, York, Hull and Teesside.
I've already accepted Hull, got rejected at York and withdrawn the rest. Not sure if you've had any interviews yet but from my experience they've been pretty hard going. I was always in large groups of 20+ at my interviews and admissions always mentioned the high number of applicants, and that people are very lucky to even get to the interview stage.
Also, if asked about your experience working in a school is still very relevent; monitoring children and their behaviour is just one example. I wasn't asked for previous experience at Interview as it was written in my PS so they didn't need telling twice, or that's what I thought, lol.
Teesside is my local Uni so best of luck with your interview.Last edited by Robbie_Tor; 13-02-2010 at 01:16. -
Re: Social Work!! interviewThat is relevant experience, you just need to be able to reflect on it and demonstrate what you have got out from it, and show the skills that will transfer to social work.(Original post by rlnixon)

Social work is competitive, but you have got an interview, so you're halfway there. Make sure you know about current issues, have a look at www.communitycare.co.uk.
Good luck

I thought the interview was quite daunting, there were 2 men sitting at opposite sides of the room asking me questions. But now looking back they may have just wanted to see how you coped under pressure. Just be yourself and im sure you'll get in

Re: Social Work!! interview
I'm not sure how to quote on here ha! So i'm just going to reply to u all
. THANKS for the replies!!
Robbie_Tor - Yes i've had 1 interview at Sunderland and that was awful.. I mean they were okay they made me feel at ease, it was my nerves that took over =/. Yes they also told me at Sunderland that 200 applicants were not even going to get looked at due to the high amount! Thank you.. I just feel a little unexperienced compared to other applicants.
~Mandy~ - Thank you for that website I've seen it mentioned throughout the thread, and thanks for the support!
5697 - Hi my interview isn't till April =/ I'm hoping theres still places by then! I was wondering what the written exercise asked you to do? I'm really bad under pressure! but then again I suppose everyone is. Thanks. -
Re: Social Work!! interviewThey said that they had about 64ish places and would also have others on the waiting list. Im sure you'll be fine(Original post by rlnixon)

I had an interview at Sunderland today and they said that because of the high number of people they have to interview we wouldn't hear back until April. Which isn't really that fair considering they already got back to the first group that had their interviews. The written exercise was based on a short video we watched, approx 2.30mins. I think the questions would be the same for each group but are based on a different video. They just asked did the social work show good or bad practice explain your reasons. How would you expect a good social worker to practice and something else but I forgot. I don't think what I wrote was particularly good but I made sure my spelling and punctuation was correct and that I made sense. At first I thought that the time limit was going to be way too long but when I started I thought of loads to write and could have written lots more. I'm sure you'll fine
At the end of my interview I thought there was no way that I would be in. The men said at the end of the interview that I didn't know enough knowledge about social work... but I must have got something right lol. Just don't worry or stress just prepare, go through the questions on here and prepare and remember they are going to take in account that your nervous as they know its really important to you

Re: Social Work!! interview
I had an interview at Teesside in Feb and have been told we have to wait 6 weeks to find out the results......the waiting is killing me, lol. I have more in March but it looks like the earlier your interview the quicker you find out, so who knows if I will get a place or not. Wouldnt mind but I live overseas so its costing me a fortune to attend
Does anyone know if other University's are now quoting a lengthy waiting time for results? -
Re: Social Work!! interview
I've applied to do Social Work at Sheffield, York, Leeds, Edinburgh and Bradford.
Had my interviews for York (got an offer) and Bradford (rejected, but I really didn't like it anyway). Got my Sheffield interview tomorrow and that's my first choice so I'm quite nervous, especially because they've said on the interview panel will be a service user so I'm not too sure how to reply to questions so that I appeal to both service user and academic. But we'll see ay
I'd just generally say not to worry about the interviews though, at the end of the day, Social Work is something you have to be passionate about, and if you are you'll do ok in the interviews!
