David Cameron's New Year message: Extremists 'will not defeat us'

Oh course they won't - durr. Talk about speaking the obvious. He will be telling us that Christmas will next happen in about a year's time next!
Seems like a rather redundant message. We're not on the cusp of defeat to ISIS or any other extremist ideologies, nor are we even under any particularly great danger from them either (in contrast, many in our grandparents' generation lived in the knowledge that they'd almost certainly be bombed that week). In fact, the only thing that is preventing us from almost annihilating them (the extremists) is our own complex political and democratic system that prevents us from using all but a small portion of its full power against them.

Did you see what happened in Munich and Belgium last night?

Not so obvious there.
We had 30 odd years of bombing from various groups and factions in Northern Ireland. They even nearly killed the PM. But they didn't even come close to destroying the state. States are strong. They are almost impossible to destroy. No amount of terrorist bombing will destroy the state of the UK. Sure, bombings are unpleasant but even the blitz didn't destabilise us. That's my point. We can take any number of bombings but they won't defeat us, where defeat means we hand over the keys to the terrorists in return for peace. He is talking the blindingly obvious.

But if they kill you have they not sort of defeated you?

Thats the reason terrorist target the innocent- because the state is too strong for them.

If isis had the power to destroy the government they would go after them and not target civilians.

This is typical tactics by terror groups.

Indeed. But the UK state will still be safe and sound. All of our lives are rather insignificant when viewed in the singularity. However, the breaking of a state is a big deal. Just look at the nightmare Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan are going though for example.

I don't think the genuine risk is from terrorist and their bombs. It is from the divisions within ourselves they bring to the surface as well as the more extreme members of our own community who are prepared to get tough at the cost of fundamental values we hold like equality and multiculturalism.
Lol. No surprise. But... never ever underestimate those extremists. He still can't see their spirits. Lol. 🔮🔮🔮🔮
