It's probably the sound of the water boiling. Does it get louder, then suddenly drop off right at the end? It does that because the water is all reaching boiling point and bubbling, but towards the end it is mostly already boiled, so it bubbles less until it clicks off. I read that somewhere :redface:
why does water boiling make noise? if you boil water in a saucepan it doesn't make noise. though maybe it's the echo-ey ness of the kettle which means you can hear it when you can't hear the saucepan.
