Why does the the human mind ignore the word "the"?

The brain has a tendency to see patterns, and right minor wrongs of its own accord so that it can make sense of something. Having two "the"s consecutively doesn't make much sense in a standard sentence, so it automatically drops one of them beyond our initial recognition.

Kinda like how if faced with a numbered list it won't immediately recognise that the numbers might go from 5 to 7 (skipping 6) because it already has a preconception of what it's reading.

That being said, I noticed the second "the" :wink:
