Hi there,

We also have a broad range of student-run 'campaigning and political' societies which might be of interest:

Since York is mainly liberal, it was quite a shock to find out that Uni of York is not...

Source? Just curious.

Hello,
So my friend started doing his degree at Uni of York this year and noticed that the university is extremely right-wing. Could someone let me know if this is true or not? I am more left-wing than right-wing and I was really planning to go to York until I found out about this. Is the right-wing attitude very obvious or is it just hints here and there? Do let me know your thoughts.

Yeah, the Young British Fascist Party has taken control of the uni, and militias mug anybody that isn't white British Protestant.

Seriously, do you think that anybody saying that a British uni is extremely right-wing is worthy of consideration?
It would be a huge generalisation to say that any student body is predominantly 'right wing' or 'left wing'. Most students I have met are uninterested in discussing politics - it's not exactly a classic ice breaker. On top of that, who cares even if most students are oriented in one way, that doesn't make them lesser people or people you can't get on with. I'm a member of the Lib Dems and I happen to live with a member of UKIP, we get on just fine. There is so much more to people than their political perspectives.

I have an ultra- leftie cousin at York and I think he has found plenty of like-minded people there.
I'm most likely going to go to York and I'm left wing. The idea of it being right wing doesn't bother me, as I've spent my entire life at an uber-conservative private school. I'm used to the type, and I have fun engaging with them in debate. Let's be honest, it'd be boring going to a uni where everyone agreed with you. Or maybe that's just me, seeing as I love arguing :colondollar:

York is going to be full of overeducated upper middle class types I expect as it is a good uni. Expect economic illiteracy and identity politics.

That's another thing that I've been wondering about - do people really regard Uni of York as a good uni? The people in York (by which I mean the local students of the university and colleges in thee area) seem to be not-so-impressed about it, so I was a bit unsure when I applied.

I have lots of friends there, they haven't mentioned any significant political bias (and I imagine they would).

Oh, I see. I don't mind people having conservative or right-wing ideas/values. I was just worried that if these are extreme or if the majority of the uni are very right-wing, I'd end up struggling to make friends or fit in... Thanks for letting me know.

That's good then, because it shouldn't matter, you are all adults there, you need to be tolerant of them as they are of you.

And conservatives are centre right really, I assume you mean more UKIP types.

I do agree with that. Nothing wrong with people having different opinions. I was just worried that if majority of the uni is very right-wing, I'd end up struggling to socialise or making friends...

Yes, by extreme right-wing I meant more like UKIP supporters (but also kind of people who are overly supportive of David Cameron).

Your pretty sad if your saying that you won't be friends with people because they have opposing political views though.

You're*
I got to know some people who were extremely right-wing and we couldn't really talk without having a clash of views on almost every topic. I have nothing against people holding different views/values. All I am trying to say is that I will find it difficult to be surrounded by people who are holding these values to the EXTREME level.

Unless you or your friend is Stalin or Mao, York is not extremely right wing in any sense of the word.

You shouldn't base your university choice on the premise of the student political consensus. It will have little to no affect on you.

Like has been said no uni is completely one way or the other on the political spectrum so that won't be a problem wherever she lands herself. Bare in mind that being an undergraduate is a new experience it will be the people that she can see eye to eye with the people that she will form bonds with that will keep her going through the experience, don't worry even if she goes to a uni people might consider to be a more left leaning than York, she won't be completely surrounded by everyone that is like minded, there will be a mix. She might have doubts about the general culture of the uni and this is just one of the checks she's making.

You've got it!

..York's MP is member of Labour party? The surrounding colleges are liberal (based on their societies). People generally seem to hold very liberal views... I've been around York my fair share of time

I was just looking for some other opinions about the university.
My friend is a hardcore liberal and I love him to bits, however, I know that when things come to talking about how left-wing or right-wing someone is, he can exaggerate. Hence, I am looking for more opinions.

And yes. I will hold my friend's opinion as worthy of consideration. Not taking his word for it (hence this discussion thread  )

I would imagine they resent it because, as a Russell Group, it'll be full of Surrey's finest, as I described, while many of them will be incapable of getting into a similar uni.

York is a solid uni for generalist, vaguely academic types who get about AAB at A-level and it is well recognised as such.

I agree with you. All I was worried about is how extreme the right-wing and left-wing division truly is.

Haha, I love debate. Arguing is not really my type of thing.

I'm glad to see someone else managing a uber-conservative environment and still enjoying themselves. From what I gathered, York might not be as right-wing as my friend claimed.

At no point did I say that the political consensus is my main (or 'base') criteria. It's just one of those little checks that I would like to tick before I make my final choice.

for me, it only becomes an argument after I win the debate and the other person gets shaken up and personal

yeah it's ok. But then I have my somewhat like-minded friendship group and I set up an unabashedly biased student newspaper. It's definitely important to have a balance in your life when it comes to those around you so I get your concern
