SL Chemistry

Anyone got any suggestions for revision etc? I'm awful at chemistry and don't want it to bring my grades down!
Hey!

I graduated IB two years ago and have been a part time tutor since then! I have just set up a website just for IB Chem and I post about how to do well in exam and concise study guides that you can use for exam revision! Hope it will help! :smile:

Hi there, I'm in my first year IB doing HL Chemistry; I'm predicted a 6 (pre year 12 mock) so I guess I'm not doing tHAT bad lMAO haha :smile:)

If you did a previous secondary course such as MYP or IGCSE/GCSE, review the chemistry material there so that you have a better understanding in IB context :smile:

Here are the things I use;

http://ibchem.com/htm/syllabus2016.htm

THIS IS ONE BAE IT LEGIT SAVED MY LIFE WHEN I DID ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (we did unit 1 then jumped straight to unit 10+20 idk why)

https://www.youtube.com/user/richthornley

HE IS ANOTHER BAE- he explains things visually and in very simple terms - and he is funny so A+

The textbook I use in class in this one;
Pearson Baccalaureate Higher Level Chemistry 2nd Edition

https://www.bookdepository.com/Pearson-Baccalaureate-Chemistry-Higher-Level-2nd-Edition-Print-Online-Edition-for-IB-Diploma-Catrin-Brown/9781447959755

it costed me around $100USD for the book but a) there is an e book so extremely handy and portable and b) vERY VERY in depth and helpful!!

The revision guide I use is this one:
Oxford IB Chemistry Study Guide (SL & HL)

BEST OF LUCK! <3

Thank you for sharing those websites!

May I ask, what are some study tips you have? How do you usually study? I'm predicted a 7 on SL Chem and a 6 on Bio HL, but I don't feel like I master the subjects well enough. I'd love it if we could talk and maybe study together sometimes!

aHHH you'll be fine haha I mean you're predicted a 7?!?! :biggrin:
The way I study is usually this; I read the next unit (in my textbook) in which the class is going to be studying, then I make notes on (even if I don't quite understand it), that way when I learn it in class it is much more easier to understand- I then make more notes in class. When the unit is nearly over oR I'm studying for that topic test, I'll review the notes I already made and write up new notes which covers the entire topic in depth.

(not sure if that made sense lmao im tired)

Haha that makes perfect sense (though there are some typos here and there :tongue:). Aside from notes, do you also use like flashcards or stuff? How much do you usually study?

Aside from that I don't really use flashcards, it just doesn't work for me. I try to revise at least once per week if not, once per fortnight. But right now I'm trying to spent at 10 mins each day skimming through my notes

That's some good routine, Ben! I'll try it out. Thank you!

When going through new content/topics in your textbook, read it at least 3 times through(Making new notes on the book and underlining every time through). When you feel confident with the content, you can try to draw mind maps out from memory. I studied a different topic everyday of the week, repeating this routine every week. The study method above got me a 7 in HL Chem without having to write a single page of study notes:'D
Other helpful hints:
-Don't listen to music when revising even if you believe you can 'multi-task'
-Circle or put a sticky note where you have made an error, come back and redo those questions in a week time
-Be interested in what you learn, that is the key to the 7(This makes studying less of a torture)
