Westwood is a legend and doesn't get anywhere near enough credit for what that he's done for hip hop in this country. Yeah he acts a fool on pimp my ride etc etc but musically, and don't shoot me down, can be classed as a pioneer for hip hop music in this country.
For those who don't know, Westwood started as a reggae DJ back in the early 80's and then changed to hip hop when it became massive in the states. He then set up KISS FM as a pirate radio station with Trevor Nelson back in the late 80's and was playing Public Enemy, ATCQ, Eric B + Rakim etc Due to the overwhelming success of the station and his hip hop show, the only one of its kind in the UK, he signed to Capital FM (london). He was then extremely influencial in getting acts like Public Enemy, Run DMC to perform in the UK after many people were against rappers coming here. At this time he was involved in producing some tracks from the Uk act 'London Posse' which Rodney P was a member of. He moved to Radio 1 and ever since has one of the most listened to shows on the channel. In terms of breaking new mainstream hip hop, he's the second most influencial DJ in the world, every act goes to after Funk Master Flex.
It actually annoys me when people dont really understand what he's done for hip hop. I hate the personality he portrays on TV but admire what he's done for the music I've loved for the past 15years.
