Homesick

I am a first year student and after coming back to uni after Christmas I don't feel settled at all. I feel really lonely and would love to be back at home as I am not enjoying university life.

I want to stay at University to get my degree but I was wondering if in year 2 I should commute as I live about 40 miles away which takes about an hours travelling each way.

I just feel overwhelmed and very unhappy. Can anyone give me any advice?

I do have a few friend but not many. I get really anxious about social situations and I just kind of shut myself in my room all of the time.

I had a bad experience with some house mates before Christmas and it forced me to have to move out of my old accommodation so after Christmas I moved to a completely new place.

I just don't know what to do.

I just want to go home:-( and it was there fault, I didn't come to university to be picked on and feel uncomfortable.
Check out uni's closer to home. You could transfer for the second year and live at home.

I come back to my room and read or just watch my tv, I go to the gym sometimes as well. And it will be an hour each way by car. I don't have a lot of contact hours next year so I was just thinking it would make sense to stay at home. And I'm not sure they just weren't very friendly people.

I guess you should stay at home for the second year seeing as you're only an hour away and you don't have much to do.
Yes you can. Do some research, There could be a uni nearer than an hour to your house.

Hi,

If you feel you need to talk to someone about your options or just for a friendly chat there are lots of people to get in contact with. If you feel comfortable you can talk to your College Tutors or your academic department/advisor.

Student Support has an Open Door team who you can email or drop in to see Monday - Friday. They have a page on adjusting to University which you might find helpful.

If you want to talk to somebody anonymously York Nightline is completely confidential. You can phone, chat online or drop in to talk to someone.

You can also contact YUSUs Academic & Welfare Co-ordinator, Mel Fox for advice and support using [email protected] or drop in and see her in the Student Centre.

I hope this helps and gives you an idea of who to get in contact with,

Annie
