Well the Computer sciences/IT section is completely different to the 2006 guide. Every single entry surprises me there. I'm not sure how much I trust it due to the vast disparity. I mean Bangor... how... the... hell.

I think it's incomplete.. the articles are dated 1st May and it's just past 1am..

Maybe the database backend hasn't been updated yet? I noticed the dropdown subject list entry contains 'HASH(0x8129b44)' as an entry.. so clearly it's not fully functional.

Neither Imperial nor Warwick even appear on the list for CompSci (Imperial's not even in the dropdown institution list)...

I imagine the subject rankings will be fixed by morning.

Having looked at it again, I'm going to say that any league table with such massive fluctuations from year to year cannot be trusted. How is it possible that in just one year, St. Andrews has become one of the best universities in the UK? And apparently Bath Spa is top 10 for anthropology in the country. Hmm...

For my sake, I hope you're right .

...although, they did go to some trouble to advertise when the thing would be available. I remember reading what time it would be available in Hong Kong, New York, etc... but not the UK (because we're not important). I can't think why they'd bring it on live without testing it offline first.

I hear Oxford are quite good for studying HASH(0x8129b44)? hehe

Last year Southampton were 3rd for Maths, somehow This year they've dropped down three pages Not accurate at all. I wouldn't even use it as a guide; stick with The Times if you must use league tables.

That is hardly the strangest thing in the tables. Chem Eng is one of UCLs better engineering departments but still only takes in like 350 UCAS points on average.

I've just taken a look at my area of expertise, Mechanically Based Engineering.
The right names are up there, Soton, Imperial, Loughborough etc etc but they are, as ever, in a very funny order. Bristol is only just above Nottm Trent, Cardiff Top.
Although Cardiff is a good engineering uni, so I could see a case for putting it up high. Engineering placements don't really matter anyway, as long as they top 20 are shown (and they roughly are) it's anyones game.

Those rankings look as scatty as ****

This main table dosen't seem too weird, but the individual subject tables certainly do

At least they're keeping their reputation as the ranking table of 'the left field' i suppose.

The rankings are accurate, you just have to see what they're being ranked on (there are some flaws where certain universities don't have certain scores, however). For example, Portsmouth comes 4th in the table for maths because it scores extremely well for "spend per student", "student:staff ratio" and "value added score".

Whether or not its a reliable indication of university strengths on the other hand is an entirely different matter.

Even so, Sussex has a lower score than Oxford on all but 1 count and yet still places higher with a score of 100?

Not saying that Sussex should rank higher or not, but I think different scores are given different weightings too, which might explain that.
