Self study Statistics AS/A2 to improve application for masters?

I graduated with a 2.1 (67%) in Psychology from University of Southampton in 2012. I want to pursue getting on to a funded PhD in Psychology in a few years time. In the meantime I am going to apply for different masters courses in Research Methods/Psychology. Looking at my options, I have identified several unis, Oxford, Birmingham etc that seem suitable due to their funding for phds after the Masters.

However, during my degree my statistics modules suffered poorer grades than the average. I got a 40 and 58 in first year modules and 54 in second year module. Ironically, maths was my strongest subject at school, but I spent such little time on these modules and so did poorly.

I am concerned that this will affect my application for a masters for 2016 especially for the likes of Oxford, as a Research Methods masters is quite stats heavy.

So my possible solution is to self study AS Level and possibly A2 level stats to try and improve my application (along with the added positive of self study) between now and June (given that I have taken degree modules in this already, should be able to learn it pretty quickly and try to ace it.

Any opinions if this is a good idea?
For Oxford etc it'll be a total waste of time. They aren't interested in school level stuff - they want people who have done it at degree level, and done it well. You have proved you can't work at that level already and they'll make their own fast judgment on that. Sorry if this sounds 'nasty', but you do have to be very, very realistic about Oxford etc. They have their pick of the finest graduates from the four corners of the world - they don't need people who messed up.

So.... unless you still manage to get a very high 2i or First and can therefore gloss over the Stats deficiency, doing an A level now is essentially pointless.

Alternative strategies - do a separate PG level qual in maths/stats, then apply for Research Methods type Masters.
The OU might be worth looking at - http://www.open.ac.uk/postgraduate/qualifications/c90
or this course at Sheffield - https://www.shef.ac.uk/maths/prospectivepg/taughtpg/pgstats/gradcert
or at York - http://www.york.ac.uk/healthsciences/gradschool/pg-cert-in-health-research-and-statistics/
There are lots more, just google PG Certificate Statistics.
