Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!
Hi,
Title was supposed to include d word BANS after smoking lol
I heard that smoking will soon be legally banned in the UK... does anyone know what effect this will have on the accommodation in self-catered flats? Does anyone know if smokers will be put together in a flat... and what the situation is in Raleigh at the moment? I did put down that I am a smoker, but wasn't informed if I was going to be able to smoke in my room... I'm the kind of person that NEEDS to smoke in order to compose pieces of writing, I CAN'T CONCENTRATE without my crutch
Another thing... living on da beautiful island of Malta I'm used to parties which go on ALL NIGHT LONG (I'm used to going home at around 7am!) What's the scene like in the UK? Do all clubs really close at around 2am as I've heard, or are there some after-hour clubs that stay open?
What's the clubbing scene like in UK? I'm into electro, progressive and the really hard stuff

Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!
The closing time for clubs tends to vary dependant on which clubs you go to - Oceana and Ocean close at I believe sometime between 3.30 and 4am (I'm never in a great state by that time!), but if you like Drum & Bass, you're a bit more in luck, there is often events going on that don't stop till 6am.
Unfortunately a lot of the music in clubs is Cheese music
With regards to smoking, it's not being banned completely, just banned in public. I'm not entirely sure how it will work. I know it is banned in workplaces, and enclosed spaces (e.g. clubs) but I think it is permitted in your own house - so I guess it is up to the Uni, as you are living in the Uni's house (well, flat or whatever, but I think it's the same thing.)
Even if not, all you have to do is walk outside, it's what I have to do here in Willoughby, it's a bit of a pain and disrupts me from working but gotta be done I suppose!Last edited by JMG; 05-05-2007 at 12:57. -
Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!
I'm suprised at the amount of people who have never come across the term Cheese Music
Basically Cheese Music just tends to mean slightly older, sing-along songs (such as Bon Jovi, Abbas' Dancing Queen, songs like that) - although there are a few newer, better songs mixed in as well, like the Kooks, and usually Pendulums' Slam

Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable! You mean they actually play THAT in clubs?(Original post by JMG)

Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!
Ughh I'd have to be SERIOUSLY drunk to be able to enjoy that kind of stuff.. and even then, i think i'd be in a SLIGHTLY BAD MOOD lollll...
i mean.. it's ok to be in a car full of girls listening to avril levigne/pink/britney(?) singing girly-stuff at the top of our lungs, but... in a bar... on a Saturday night..?? I'd rather stay at home
what about parties... raves? nothing?

as far as I understand we're not even talking avril/pink here, it's more like 'the best of the last 2 decades'(Original post by sweetcherry)

On a more serious note... what does Oceana play on a Saturday night? Does ANY CLUB play techno/progressive? ...please??
Hey exo i PMed u n got no answer, did u see my message? -
Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!Oceana's alright, as it has a few different rooms, so if you don't like Cheese, just don't go to the Cheese room, although you may have the problem of all your mates going in there so you have little option but to follow!(Original post by sweetcherry)

Also, Monday night is the Oceana Nottingham Uni student night, so you'll probably be there more than on Saturdays

Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable! But isn't student night the night where they play the 'cheesiest' music ever? Cos that's what i read on some of the threads here... so i guess i'll be reserving student night to revising or somethin lol(Original post by JMG)

Another thing, if possible, the friends i make will be friends who like the type of music (and thus clubs) that i like... so this raises another question sweet JMG (thanks for adding me on my brand new face book, haven't any friends there yet!)... are there any societies for 'real hard clubbers'???
-
Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!
Well, in most places Student nights is where the Cheesey music is played, but again thats when most of the students (so, your friends?) will be going out. It's probably a good idea to go out on these nights at the beginning of the year anyway, to make more friends and such.
Although like I said, even on student nights Oceana has multiple rooms so you can choose from a few genres of music which one you want to be hearing.
Also, seeing as Nottingham is a big place, there is clubs (and possibly societies - have a look at the Freshers Fair when you get there) for pretty much all the types of music around, for example if you like D&B, there is Stealth. You just need to find a few people who like the same type of music as you do (through a society, perhaps), and you're set. -
Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!
Don't expect anything like the euro techno scene here in the UK. The clubs also shut much earlier (ah the days of catching the tram home at 7 with a freshly baked pain-au-chocolat). However there is plenty of music going on and I'm sure you'll find your niche. Smoking may be a problem, I'm not sure what the university's stance on this is going to be.

Smoking is always a problem... bans are being introduced everywhere... oh well(Original post by ChemistBoy)

Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!well, that stupid ban thing was ordained here in Lithuania at the beginning of this year and it's not as bad as i thought it would be, you just basically have to go outside the bar/club/whatever to smoke. though it seriously sucks in winter, it gets ******* cold(Original post by sweetcherry)

Cool... we can go freeze off our butts together
PS: i love smoking and chatting/gossiping (and whatever else takes my fancy) over a steamy mug of coffee... adds that tiny extra zest to life

Re: Clubs' closing time, smoking and other things that make my life miserable!
Stealth is quite good for electro & D&B type music. Definitely don't go to Oceana or Ocean, they're like the seventh circle of hell if you're not into mainstream music or drunken morons taking their shirts off to the Baywatch theme. Well, I've only been to Oceana once, but it was really bad, and have heard enough about it from my friends who go to those kinds of places.
But chemistboy was right, there really is nothing like the European electro/house scene over here; which is ok for me as I'm not really that into it, but I can see that it might be a pain. Don't worry though, the whole of Nottingham isn't full of clubs that just play "cheese", if you know where to go & where to avoid like the plague! And I hate that the only food around is always junk, I generally wait until I'm back in my room and eat there, but I'm so jealous of anyone in a country where they can get fresh croissants after a night out. An exchange student friend I met last semester talked about a 24 hour bakery he went to after nights out in Australia...sounds like the best idea ever...
But the smoking ban, I'm really happy about that (as a non-smoker.) I hate coming back from a night out and having to put the clothes straight in the wash, because they'll make my whole room smell of smoke otherwise. I guess smoke covers up the smell of alcohol and sweat in clubs, but that is about its only redeeming function for me.
