Is UCL just massively overrated or does it deserve being 7th in the world?

More amazing than Princeton, Yale, Imperial, LSE, Durham, St andrews, Columbia???

I just don't see any evidence that it can be better than universities like Yale and Princeton.

What evidence would you like?

I was just referring to it overall.
On this forum UCL is massively underrated by clueless sixth form students, but in the real world it is considered to be a very good university with many world leading departments. It is folly to try and compare UCL like-for-like with foreign universities or specialist institutions like LSE or Imperial.

UCL is unsurprisingly dismal at teaching most of its courses

How would you know?

Also, surely humanities focused institutions will lose out if world rankings are based on research.

I've heard that this is the case. Just look at LSE on an international ranking.

UCL is 3rd in the UK according to the global rankings but THIRTEENTH on domestic which is crazy that it's ahead of imperial

KCL and LSE are also very differently placed on global rankings
KCL: 5th (19th globally) in UK on world ranking, 23rd in uk on domestic
LSE: 8th (35th globally) in UK on world ranking, 3rd on domestic

Hi everyone,

After looking at the contrast between UK and world rankings I noticed UCL was the most dramatic.

Is UCL really the 7th best uni above the likes of Durham, St Andrews, Princeton, Yale, Columbia ext. (QS world rankings)?

It seems odd that it should be ranked 9th in the UK and 7th in the world, so is it just massively overrated?

It is a very bad university, do not rely on rankings
All these people hating on UCL either by Imperial snobs or by rejects. lol...

Don't look at world rankings for undergraduate degrees.
And don't look at QS. This ranking is better:
https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2016/world-ranking#!/page/0/length/100

This 110%.

Sort the ranking by the "research" criteria, and pretty much there you have your ranking of best unis in the world.

In the THE ranking, LSE is at its place. QS is a terrible ranking.

So you don't really rate LSE then?
Regardless I very much like the THE ranking in general. It just seems jars with my perception of LSE.

What do you mean "I don't rate it"? It's 23rd in the world in the THE, despite its lack of sciences departments.

Don't get me wrong, 23rd is great - but it's below several UK universities that just don't look like they should beat it. Regardless of specialisation.

QS rankings seem to favour not just UCL, but several UK universities; Manchester, Bristol and Warwick all make the top 50! Not to belittle any of these universities, but these rankings seem questionable.

Regarding UCL, it is a very prestigious uni. As another poster pointed out, a better table is provided by TIMES, here UCL still make the top 15. I'm not sure why UCL receives flak from TSR users, I guess it is in part due to domestic tables and general naivety. If academic rigour and prestige are of more concern than student satisfaction, UCL undoubtedly deserves the great international rep it has.

When people on TSR rate universities they rate them as venues for undergraduate study. Then they look at tables which rank universities on a wider set of criteria and moan if they don't agree.

Asking "is UCL really better than Durham?" is asking "is UC Berkeley really better than Williams?"
