hi, congratulations on the position of vice president. i was wondering whether you could tell me about the ethnic composition of people within the uni, in particular indians. this is something that really worries me as i hopefuly i can assimilate into the uni community but how would students respond to me when trying to become their friend, especially because i come from a different background. also quite bluntly is there much racism or discrimintion and to what degree? is bristol a multi-cultural uni? thanks in advance

You don't need to worry about racism seriously there isn't any since i have been in bristol. Well when i got to bristol i found out quickly there wasn't many indians or asian people in general. You won't find it difficult to settle in because when you first get to bristol everyone will be nervous and will be looking for someone to talk to them and make them feel comfortable. So i reckon you will all be in the same boat when you get here so don't worry about making friends. You can get in touch with me once you get to bristol and i can introduce you to current members of this society so that you will have people from the same ethic background as you to associate with. Make sure you feel free to ask me what you are worried about but make sure you look us up or just send me a message on this website if you need someone to help you settle down. I found it a little to settle down when i came to bristol because i come from east london and it is mainly populated with asians, but i learnt fast there are many people like you who will be in bristol.

This may sound slightly stupid, but I'm asian... and I was wondering which halls i should choose i was going to select Wills / Churchill [second option] but one of my friends there said that its got a lot of people who are already in cliques and therefore is less sociable so he advised me to apply to Badock instead because people there are more friendly.

i'm usually not worried about making friends, cause never really had an issue (not to be egotistic) but im an international student, who's never lived in england.. just been to newcastle and london a few times. so maybe things are different... any advice?

Baddock is a awesome hall to live in because they have many events and there bar is very sociable. I am currently living in durdham hall this year and it has also been good because there is only around 230 of us in this hall and due to it having this many people everyone really knows everyone else in the hall. If you are going to apply for a catered hall than baddock is the right choice.

Lol Hiatt Baker is better, it has more students hence more choice to mix around with :P

BTW I'm Asian too, Malaysian in fact. Secretary of the Malaysian Singaporean Society. Welcome to Bristol lolx. Was in HB last year, Park Street this year.

All the people I've met so far have been very friendly, no racism, or very few cases if any.

lmao about the roti ThEbAdGuY...good to know that you're learning..i still haven't...!
    Dalz..
i'm also in a pickle about accom! stuck between winkworth (due to ensuiteness, location and not having to walk 35 mins to lectures) and HB hall (due to socialness and general hall life!)
    what do you suggest?
I'm also from East London...well, technically North East London, so, yeh, plenty of desi's, but it'll def be a nice change going to bristol...!!
oh and congrats on becoming VP for the asian culture society! x

The thing is if you don't want to walk far than you shouldn't apply to durdham, baddock, hiatt baker, wills and churhill because all these halls are in stoke bishop where i am this year and it takes atleast 30 mins to walk to university every day. If you wanna live close to uni you should apply for winkwirth, goldney or woodland court.
