Check into some internships with a few local companies, maybe? Whatever job you would like to do, ideally, there's got to be an internship somewhere that isn't quite the perfect job but will lead you to it.

Its probably a good idea to find local engineering companies and ring them or write them a letter. Its even better if its in your chosen field (if you have one).

Not sure if you want to take time out before university, but the Year In Industry scheme is a good one.

Unless you want to go to a top university (oxbridge/imperial) for engineering I wouldn't be to worried about it. It's very difficult to get engineering/science work experience.

I'm doing a one week engineering course in June (Headstart), hopefully that will be good, and give me some 'umph' to put on my UCAS application

Oh yes, Headstart courses are great too, though you do have to apply quite early. Its especially useful if you went to Oxford, for example, and wanted to apply there as you'd also get a taste of the university at the same time.

i will be applying for top uni's and i have a headstart course at durham uni, but one of the main reasons that i wanted to gain work exp. is because i am split over doing engineering or economics at uni and this should hopefully shed light on it. work in the finance industry is difficult and long but very well paid, and engineering can be self fulfilling but often underpaid?!

Engineering IMHO.

As for work experience, try bigger companies like BAE and Airbus etc

IMHO means "in my humble opinion".

Have a look at the nuffied bursaries, you get paid (albeit a small amount) to work for Engineering firm for about a month in the summer. http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/go/grants/nsbsc/page_394.html
I did one last year, mine was as boring as hell, but that was because there was a mix up with the people they normally use.
But other people's seemed quite interesting, and its something good to have on your personal statement.
