The city council have closed off most of the areas that previously didn't require permits. One of my friends kept his car in a long stay car park for first year but it cost him a fortune.
For first year you'd be best off taking the train home at weekends.
In second and third year if you get a house then you can get a parking permit for that road for like £50 per year.
There aren't any trains to where I live (Louth) :/
