Hi,
If you were asked in an exam why the alkali metals are stored in oil, would the correct answer be:
"to stop it reacting with the air"
OR
"to stop it reacting with oxygen"

To stop it reacting with anything in the air. The biggest problem is water vapour ...

I would say "to stop it reacting with the air" as the assorted components of the air all play a part in how the alkali metal changes when in contact with its environment.

I would say the correct answer would be to prevent the metal reacting with water vapour in the air

The best answer that covers all your bases (no pun intended) is "To prevent it from reacting with water vapour in the air". That was word for word the answer in the mark scheme in every chemistry GCSE paper I ever did
