Chemistry question

How might the lakes have become acidified?

I think that one of the causes is acid rain and it is true but I don't seem to have anything other than that, so I'd love to know more reasons.

Dumping waste into them could do it.

Perhaps is it a lake near a volcano? Acidic gases such as sulfur dioxide might have dissolved in the water. Or in the cases of hot springs in the presence of sulfur containing minerals.
