Not provoking a major power in order to cause a cataclysmic war which will cause the death of millions, thank you very much.

Boring...

But of course, them provoking us by threatening and invading our allies, exercising their military hardware down our coastline and generally being belligerent bell ends is perfectly fine. We must allow that!

Ive seen plenty of NATO planes on the borders of the Baltics but i am yet to see a MiG down the coast of cornwall or florida.

1) Any Baltic country with an agenda against Russia (and that's all of them) claim that. Whether any of those threats are real or perceived, remains to be seen.
2) Still don't believe that they did that - seems unlikely.
3) They are in their rights to practice their military drills, but yes, I do agree if the aforementioned is true, then it would seem worrisome.

And don't think that I sympathize with the Russians. But I'm not so blind as to believe whatever the British news channels tell me. Courtesy of watching 7 news channels from 6 separate countries, each speaking their own language. The image seems somewhat...convoluted, when everyone's blaming the other. Are the Russian ships really in the channel? Go on a boat to it and take a few photos of them and show us, and maybe I won't be so skeptical.

1) it's because there's a NATO mission to provide the Baltic states with air defence. That's been on going for a decade.
2) of course you wouldn't, because they're fighters with limited range. You do, however, see Tu95 long range bombers fly down both coasts of the UK on a fairly regular basis.

So they're OK to practise their military drills but we're not? That's some kind of twisted logic.

And so some research. Simply put in "Russian navy English channel" and you'll get numerous hits from many different sources. Put in "Russian bombers RAF scramble" and you'll get many hundreds more. They do it on a regular basis.

Don't we do it as well? I seem to hear it now and then on the Russian news.

Frankly, I couldn't give a damn. This government is incompetent enough as it is.

But are they flying right on the border or in international waters?

We don't fly down their coast, no. Our equivalent is this, sending ships kinda nearby.

And what makes you think theirs isn't? All governments are incompetent bureaucracies, that's the very nature of them. But saying you couldn't give a damn is redundant as you clearly do, or you wouldn't have been so vociferous in your denial of facts here.

Both. They're on the international side of the border, but as close as they can be. They know it's a provocation, they know we're monitoring all flights, they know we know they're there. We know that they know that we know. Is it legal? Of course it is. Doesn't stop it being harassment.

How do know?

I'm ex-RAF.

Ooh, look at that, news from the future. Thursday 14 April 2016
During the cold war (1980's) we had 4 divisions (circa 70,000+ troops with all their equipment) stationed in northern Germany along the Warsaw Pact border as part of our commitment to NATO Allied Forces in Central Europe (AFCENT)

They count the lifeboats these days.

I expect Putin threw his hands up in defeat when he heard the news.

Check the news. They've done it roughly once a year for the past few years. As well as numerous examples of sending bomber aircraft down our coast. Don't blame me for you not following the news.

Of course not. But judging by your comments thus far I don't expect you would understand the nuances behind exercises like this.

can we sue them in international court for that?
Original post by The Warsmith
I somewhat doubt the credibility of that article. Funny how I haven't heard it once on the news. Surely such an event would spike a bit more talk, but it hasn't, so I have a feeling that NATO's overreacting.

You haven't heard about it because it isn't a big deal, and nor is the response to it. If any of this were important, you'd have heard more about it.

Also, what do they plan to do next? Start a major offensive move on Russia?

Obviously not. Two escorts and a handful of minesweepers are not Operation Barbarossa.

Anyway, this is a false equivalence. The Baltics are part of NATO; flying planes in the Baltics is flying planes in our own territory. Russia doesn't have a border with Cornwall.

Theyre playing by the rule books albeit a little snakeishly so no.
