Accommodation!?!?

Hi!

I have confirmed my place to start at CCCU Medway Campus in April and I am now deciding whether to apply for accommodation or not. Currently I live in South East London so would take around 45 minutes - one hour to commute everyday so I previously was considering accommodation. However, my parents are now moving out to Maidstone (before I start the course) so this journey will only be 30 minutes each way now which seems a lot more reasonable. Problem is I'm not sure whether I'd still like to move into halls for the first year for the experience of it - I'm an NHS student so this will only increase my student loan by about £2000 and that is all I will have to pay at the end of the course so that's not really the problem. It's just that now I have chose the Medway campus I don't REALLYYY feel as though it's a student town and although Rochester is close with a few bars etc I just don't know whether it will be worth it / I'll enjoy my time. I would only live in accommodation for the first year and would commute the next 2 to save on money. I just like the idea of the whole experience of moving out of home and having to look after myself more etc....and now I'm wishing I chose the Canterbury campus for this reason :s-smilie::frown:

I don't know whether I'm just being crazy and I should just commute due to the location & the fact it isn't that far away!? Any advice / opinions appreciated!
There are quite a few threads on commuting which may be of some help? You may find that you miss out on a lot. Although, because you're only 30 minutes away, you can nip home when you want (meaning if you're in for an hour and then nothing for 2 or 3 hours again, it's not a problem) and it shouldn't be an issue when it comes to socialising.

One thing to bare in mind, is that if you are eligible for travel allowance from nhs bursary then traveling to your placement has to be more expensive for you get any money back. So say commuting costs you £5 a day and traveling to placement cost you £6 then you'd be able claim £1 a day back. I d say there are pros and cons to living in as an nhs students, some universities might put all the nhs students together in which case i wouldnt be worried, however halls can be noisy places and if you have to be up at 5am and your not a heavy sleeper that could cause you some problems.
I don't really see much point in getting accomodation in Rochester if you're in Maidstone. If anything, it's probably going to be easier to get friends you make at uni to join you in Maidstone for nights out and you could offer them a floor to kip on. I think you should use your Maidstone location to your advantage here!
