A Levels - hardness?

I here everyone moan about how hard they are. Are they harder in content {difficult to understand} or is it basically the same level as GCSE just quadruple the amount of stuff to learn? I'm doing English A Level and technically that can't really get harder, I'll just have more books to read and essays to write.
Thoughts?

Probably less to learn overall but harder questions and more challenging content
They aren't hard though

Also English A level is somewhat harder to get marks in; they are less forgiving and generally demand more organisation, intelligent points, comparative skills, etc.
