Gravitational waves confirmed!

‘We are going to see things that we never knew existed’ say scientists announcing the detection of gravitational waves

This is awesome

Not only does it help solidify strength of the theory of general relativity it is has essentially given us a whole new spectrum of "stuff" to do astronomy with. Up to now the main way to obverse and learn about the universe has been using electromagnetic waves. We can now add gravitational waves to that

It's like being given another set of eyes that can detect ultraviolet, except in this case it isn't just an extenuation of a spectrum we can already detect part of, it;s a completely different source that transmits information.
What stunning news. Fantastic for physics and science as a whole!

Why should we care?

Awesome! LIGO have done a good experiment. BICEP 2 thought they directed it (indirectly) but their finding was ruled out by thw result possibly being space dust.

Gravitational waves will gives us another frequency to look at astronomical phenomenon. Exciting times ahead.

Einstein's prediction being discovered just shows what a mathematic genius he was. Just imagine what he could achieve in the modern era?

We need a unified theory for general relativity and QM now.
Excellent news!
Hooray for science! :woo:

Yes but first we nedd to explore the possibilites unlocked by this discovery.
People like einstein and newton are once in a generation gift to physics .. We simply have to wait for another one with an absolutely revolutionary picture of physics to come up .

Also a quick question .. Do you believe the grand unified theory is possible ?
It's absolutely extraordinary how sensitive their equipment is. A triumph for science and engineering!

Well, for one we normally end up making useful technologies that depend on scientific discoveries like this. Thankfully not everyone is so small minded and proudly ignorant that we do actually get the benefit from these things. Then just to rub it in.. "huh duh what did relativity ever do for us" whilst they text their friends on their iphones... or use student forums.

You may as well ask why you should you care about the discovery of electromagnetism in Maxwell's time lol

You haven't given me a reason to care, just gotten pissy that I don't.

They were once generationin a revolutionaries. We need a paradigm shift to unlock the next phase.

I'm not sure if it can be done. It could be beyond the knowledge point for the human race. I would love to believe it can be done but ultimately evade us.
A big a congratulations to all who were involved in these findings! A great day!

Its a centuary of research coming to reality that would usher more research and take mankind forward .when this happens science always leaves some concept which later is exploited by technology to make lives easier.
