International students 07

Can not find any thread for international students who start UK unis in September. Have lots of questions: how to get a cell phone, open a bank account etc. Could anyone share their experience or advise? What to bring, what to buy in UK (TV, iron? etc), how much could be arranged before actually arriving in UK? When students go on Christmas vacation (the website says 15 Dec, but when do most people leave, Friday or Saturday??) I understand that diferent unis will have different experiences, but the general things. Would appreciate any input!!
