Firstly, there's no exams at the start of term (why would there be?).

The exams are all unseen in that you aren't told anything about or shown the paper before you sit it. You are told when/where it is though, so there's no surprise. You won't (at undergrad level) have formal exams until the summer term, although there are regular informal tests on webct.

Formal (unforseen) exams are pretty tough. They are between 2 and 3 hrs in length and depending on the module may be essays, short questions, calculations etc. There's no multiple choice exams.

It says assessment will be done through various ways. One of these ways is unforseen exams they say.

Should we expect a general essay question in the beginning day of the term???

And is the practise resembles a quiz? or are these unforseen exams equivalent to the 3 hour ones in difficultiness...

The question you should be asking is who "they" are. Any rumour of a surprise test is rubbish, I just finished my first year and we didnt have any such test. It won't happen and never would. What's the point in giving you a test when you haven't learnt anything yet?
