Well at Oxford we wear full subfusc to every lecture, but they don't have nearly the same sense of style at Cambridge.

Very casual; no one dresses up for lecture or tutorials.

i'd advise wearing a suit every day :P - these darn new students lowering standards!

Regarding the questions you've been sent, it would probably be wise to find out if you can get away with not doing them, or if you'll be going over them in your first supervisions.

about the questions - i'm starting engineering next year too (on a gap year at the moment) and the official line is that your first supervision will be on them so if you don't do them before going you end up spending freshers week doing them or you sit there looking like a prat in the first supervision and your DoS isn't madly impressed. on the other hand you can pretty much ignore the reading list apparently - only for the really enthusiastic/bored over the summer.

for science subjects there arent many interesting reads are there - only textbooks!

Ooohhhh ... first year Cambridge engineers! Ahhh the memories ...

Yes, you will be expected to have done the Preparatory Problems for Engineers questions and you are more than likely to be supervised on them!
