I have heard Trinity College Dublin has free education for home & EU students, as apparently do all Southern Irish Universities.

Is this true?

If so I should have applied there instead, hmph. But would be useful for my younger sister to know I suppose.

Quote me if anyone replies.

It is true as regards tuition fees. There IS a registration charge, which is hovering around €980 in TCD and €900 in other unis here that you have to pay every year, though those who qualify for the grant get refunded on it. There is no student loan/debt culture here. There is debt, for accommodation but that's about it. There is a downside- all 7 ROI unis are in debt, UCD and TCD especially and none of them can truly compete on the world stage as a result, Trinity still manages to improve its ranking year on year though, which is impressive considering its wealth against those it ranks beside, bristol etc.

There is a debate raging about bringing fees back at the moment, either on a massive high-earner threshold (€120k a year ish) or student loan basis, but I am of the opinion it will not happen, it would be shooting themselves in the foot as regards a 'knowledge economy' and the student loan basis, would damage graduate prospects because everything's more expensive here, when they start to take your wages for loan repayment, nobody would be able to afford a house/car etc.
