Re: University Air Squadron FAQ (WIP)
Hi everyone
Im going to uni hopefully this october and want to join the UAS and then the RAF after uni. I was wondering how much field exercises in CS95 combat gear you do in the UAS or is it all flying and blues (No 1's etc.). Im in the CCF (cadets) at the minute in the RAF section so was wondering how similar UAS is to CCF aswell. Also how much shooting do you do? Also, can you do sport for the university and the UAS or is it best just to do one or the other and not both. Sorry for asking so many questions!! Cheers.

At present, not that much, but it is being developed and increased [it's only recently that you even get issued S95s, for example]. It also depends a lot on the squadron you join. I know of one who's CO is a former Marine and so has positively encouraged every opportunity for getting dirty. Other squadrons are still getting up to speed, though.
However, the vast majority of time you will be in your flying suits. No1s might be worn, but not that much, depends a lot on how active you are.
As for comparing it to CCF, I can't say. I was an ATC cdt in a previous life, and other than knowing how/who to salute there wasn't much relevancy between the two. I'd wager the same would be said for the CCF - there's certainly no rank structure to adhere to [between OffCdts, anyway].
Like I say, all 'green' stuff is getting better, including shooting. There is, as there has always been, an annual shooting competition [pistols and rifles], but I never made it to one as it always clashed with some other activity we had planned. But don't bet on there being more than 2 or possibly 3 events a year.
There are no restrictions on your time, if you are able to fit it all in, then there's absolutely no reason why you can't play uni sports as well as UAS sports. I was a very active member of my UAS, yet still managed to play [and Chair] a uni sports team. Another of my sqn members was one of the university's football captains. As always though, the most important criteria is not whether each fits in with one another, but whether they fit in with your studies, after all, that's why you're at uni.
Where are you looking at going? -

Hi Drewski
Thanks for the info.
At present, not that much, but it is being developed and increasedSounds good to me, I want to be a Pilot in the RAF eventually but still loveLike I say, all 'green' stuff is getting better, including shooting!! Also the shooting sounds good, is that proper pistols (9mm etc.) or air pistols? Also do you fire the 7.62 target rifles?every opportunity for getting dirty
I'm probably going to go to either Bath or York so BUAS or YUAS I think.

Oh ok! Sounds pretty good. I assume you are in teh UAS, how did you manage to get on it if its run by the OTC or is just organised by them and open to all units?
Sorry to keep asking more questions!!!
Cheers
Run by them, organised for all.
And I was in the UAS. Off to the real thing soon enough. -

Whats the situation if your in the TA when you go for your UAS interviews?
Obviously you can't be in the TA and UAS at the same time, so does that affect your possibility of getting in if you've got the "hassle" of getting out the army first?
Not in my experience.
We had a guy who was TA and then came to uni and joined the squadron, he managed it fine. Because of his 'lesser' status within the ranks of the TA [obviously not actually, but not being able to deploy and not being fully qual'd, etc...] it was pretty straight forward for him to get a discharge from the TA and then enrol with the squadron with no hassle.
He just waited until he was certain he was on the sqn before doing it, though he told his TA OC about the situation beforehand.
