Sorry for resurrecting an old thread.

Drewski, is it really based upon how much I research it? I know so much about the military in general (apart from the Navy), and I enjoy doing a bit of research every now and then.

I know I can do the research aspect, though I don't have a, let's say magnificent, history regarding extra curriculum activities. Obviously I do a lot of sport (football, basketball, badminton), but other than that and my job I don't do a whole lot - which I can imagine being a negative.
    Why wouldn't it be?

Hasn't everyone merely researched it before doing anything? Sometimes that 'research' has involved being in the ATC for 6 years, sometimes it's reading the RAF and MoD websites.
Any interview is just about answering questions and then them finding out how you react when you run out of answers. No reason why research can't get you through it... what else would?

Extra curriculum activities? I've not been in the ATC (as much as I regret that), I play sports but like I said nothing exceptional. I know the competition is fierce so I can imagine there being other applicants that HAVE been in the ATC etc, and are going to research it into depth as much as me.

If the selection process is mainly regarding your knowledge of the RAF/UAS then I'm sure I'll be okay, hopefully anyway.

You need to sell yourself no one else is going to do that or you, focus on your hobbies, I am lucky enough to have done many sports at a high level but I have also gone out of my way to do coaching courses volunteering charity work you must have done something like that with your school/work.

You don't have to be amazing you just have to show a drive to do things.

I am currently thinking of joining ESUAS next year after the summer term. I will be going into 3rd year of uni but will still have 2 years left on my course, what is a term defined as? Will I be able to join?

Yes, the rules changed two years ago, allowing UAS' to recruit from any year (useful in Scotland where you get 4 years). You really have to impress through, the staff will want to see what you've been doing with your first two years at uni.

    Afternoon guys,

I've been trying to get in contact with the UAS over some time by email. I emailed YUAS a few months ago but have not received a reply; I also emailed the general UAS (at Cranwell) email address, which I assume is like the head office for the UASs, and I haven't received a response from them either. I emailed RAF Careers prior to all this and they said I should email the specific UAS.

I was wondering if anyone has a genuine and regularly-checked email address, either for YUAS specifically, or just UAS enquiries in general.

    Cheers for any help.
I emailed YUAS about last year and they never replied, the email address must be wrong on their website, I'll try asking a mate I know there to see if he knows a new one.

Hi mate, I've spoken to the guy and he says he doesn't know of any new email addresses so I don't know what to suggest, unless someone else on here has any news or suggestions.

    Sorry.

Recruitment for YUAS is now closed for the academic year 2011/12. Try this site for future reference:

1- don't know about anyone else, but that site won't load for me.
2- the RAF's main sites are notoriously bad for never being updated.
3- I'll bet you any amount of money you like that their recruitment is over by November/December of the academic year.

YUAS won't take on now until around September/October time. You are better of going along to freshers fair wherever it may be and they will be recruiting there.

Hey, I want to join the Wales UAS at Cardiff hopefully but I wear glasses for things like driving etc. I have a full driving license however, would that stop me from joining? I also have an allergy to pollen. Does this mean I would fail the medical standard to join the UAS?

Is it possible to join UAS when doing an Open University degree fulltime whilst also being in full time employment?

You have to be at a university with an affiliated unit. There are plenty of actual bricks and mortar unis that aren't directly covered by a UAS, so an 'online' institution will almost definitely not be covered. You've got nothing to lose by sending an email to your nearest UAS, but don't expect much.

Mention in a UAS interview that you're doing it to "carry on with the ATC" and you'll get laughed out of the building. The two are very separate entities with very different focuses.

Do a bit of research into the UAS.
You're a member of the RAFVR, you're paid, you've got responsibilities and expectations placed upon you..

Yes there's a bit of flying, uniform and shooting, but there's a very different atmosphere about the place.

Anyone here going to be applying for 2012 entry?

Thought it might be a good idea to get a bit of a conversation going and help with the process. Only if people are willing, I could just talk to myself!
