[rant]whats wrong with you ppl?
no one ever heard of the RIO KARMA... anyone who is interested in sound quality is foolish or uneducated about mp3 players if they buy and ipod over this, IMO... mp3 sound quality is better with karma... and if you rip ur cds to flac... i doubt that the ipod will sound anywhere near as good as the karma!!! Only buy and ipod if you want to say "i got an ipod" or if you prefer looks (doesnt even look that special imo) over functionality, features and sound quality... but its not really "cool" as everyone has one now...
Its pointless in getting an ipod... iriver is better too!!! If anyone read the times a couple of days ago... they compared some... and the karma came top too...

At least you know your stuff more than the "blind" ipod fans... Well as I do not have a mp3 player i can't comment on the point of flac... but personally I would choose flac (or even ogg) over mp3 anyday... mp3 is a bit dated now... whether the quality difference is noticeable depends on many things... as you said... background noise... but there are other variables too such as the headphones and the how well the track is ripped... if you look in the right places its quite easy to download tracks in flac... but it will be a while until lossless formats like flac and ape become as widely used as mp3 is...(Original post by Dickie)
agree that things like the Karma are waay better than the ipod, but there's no point in ripping to flac, because with an mp3 player you usually listen on the move, and there is usually background noise that the player has to content with, and so any change in quality wont be noticed.
