The operation of markets and market failure - 16 May 2016 [Exam discussion]

This thread is for the AQA economics paper "The operation of markets and market failure".

Below I have linked past papers from the old spec and specimen papers for the new spec, which should all be very useful when revising and getting to grips with exam technique.

Specimen papers: http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/economics/as-and-a-level/economics-7135-7136/assessment-resources

Old past papers: http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/economics/as-and-a-level/economics-2140/past-papers-and-mark-schemes

Hopefully this thread will be found useful for discussing this particular unit and the exam.

Sorry you've not had any responses about this. :frown:

Why not try posting in a specific subject forum- you might have more luck there.

Here's a link to our subject forum which should help get you more responses.

I'm averaging about the same on Multiple choice, 20/25 is usually fairly straight forward if you've revised thoroughly. How are you doing with the 25 mark essay questions? I'm currently averaging about 17, which I need to get up to 20 ideally :/

The exam technique irritates me tbh. I almost always get all of the marks for diagrams, knowledge and analysis, but then I always drop marks on really stupid things like not relating or referring to case studies and my judgements seem really weak at the moment. I think it's just doing essays until you get the hang of it, and then it's fine. My teacher said the other day that if you know how to write a "government intervention" essay for micro and an "effects of X on the UK economy" essay for macro, you should be fine at AS.

It's more to do with the quality of what your write, rather than 'how many words'. With the 25 marker you want a few paragraphs:

1)Introduction:
- Definition of a key word from the question.
- Name a few points you're going to make in the next few paragraphs.

2)Para 1:
- Make your first point
- Use a relevant diagram, and discuss it (e.g. "As figure 1 shows, a fall in
price..."
- You need chains in the links of reasoning i.e. "this this and this, may/could
lead to this" - remember that nothing is definite, so this is why we use could.

3)Para 2:
-Make your 2nd point, and follow the same structure as para.1

4)Para 3:
-Make your final point and follow the same structure as para.1&2

5) Conclusion
- Refer back to the question and summarise your points

Note:
You don't need 3 diagrams, that would be overkill
Use quotes and data from the provided extract mentioned in the question
Include 'real-life' or current time examples

How do you go about answering them? Do you tend to just fly through and put what you think, or do you really think about them and cross out which ones you figure out it can't be.

Personally, I tend to go through them and point out the key words. e.g. if it mentions a surplus on the balance of payments, I think about what this means, and how it can be changed. You want to try and cross out which of the 4 choices it can't be; this will allow you to focus on the answer rather than being overwhelmed by the other 'irrelevant' answers.

Also, once you have completed the questions, go over them with the mark scheme and the question side by side. If you've gotten it right, tick it. Got it wrong? put a cross and distinguish next to your answer what the topic is and try again. If you had no idea, circle it and then revise the topic.

I hope that helps:smile:
Anybody know any/know where to get essay question titles to practice? Not liking being the first year for new spec, there's no realistic past papers! Thanks
