American war of Independence

I am writing a history essay on "To what extent did foreign intervention lead to a British defeat in the American war of Independence", do i write how they helped contribute to the defeat and then bring in other factors such as Britain's own military inadquacies and the strong american spirit which also contributed to the defeat?
Strong American spirit? No don't mention that, there was no such thing as an American spirit back then. Britain lost that war because of France.

Yes, otherwise how can you evaluate the importance of foreign intervention?
